[Countdown to Halloween] Halloween 2016!

Wednesday, November 2, 2016

This was quite possibly the best Halloween. EVER. It's seriously amazing what a difference a year can make.

Last year, Mason was shy and timid and didn't want to walk up to houses alone let alone even carry his trick or treating bag. He had a very small vocabulary and very few words. I had to hold his hand and encourage him to walk up to houses. I had to walk him to the candy bowl and say 'trick or treat' and then 'thank you' after he was given candy. I thought last year was fun.

But this year. Oh this year! This year was AMAZING. Mason has continued to have speech therapy sessions as well as over a full year of ABA therapy and it truly shows.

But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, we had a little Halloween fun the day before Halloween that I'd like to share. On Sunday, the 30th, we went to the RISE of the Jack O'Lanterns. We had gone last year with Desiree and her family when it was at the Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge, but this year they moved the event to the LA Convention Center (the weekend I had to work) and the Fairplex in Pomona (the weekend before Halloween). We went to the Fairplex event and had a great time! I was a little skeptical because we enjoyed it so much being outside last year, but this year was no let down. I actually liked it better inside because it was less crowded (could be because they moved the venue and less people came or could be because they had times spread out all day since they could make it dark all day since it was inside) and we could easily walk along the "path" and see all the pumpkins and take as long as we needed to to take a picture. This was the first time that my mother in law, sister in law, brother in law, and nieces had seen the pumpkins and they were completely blown away. Even though the display was inside this year, it still took us over an hour to fully see an enjoy all the pumpkin amazingness.

After the RISE, we went out to lunch, headed home, did some grocery shopping, and went out to dinner for Nanny's (Seth's mom's) birthday (a day early - her birthday is Halloween).

Monday it was business as usual in the morning minus the fact that Mason brought his costume to school to do some trick or treating. I picked him up early, we made some corn bread muffins to go with the chili we made, and we headed over to my sister in law and brother in law's house to have dinner and trick or treat with all the cousins.

As I mentioned above, this Halloween was significantly different than last year. Mason has grown in so many ways and because I see him everyday, I feel like I didn't fully notice it until Halloween night when he was trick or treating. Looking back at these photos, for lack of a better phrase, gives me all the feels. I feel proud. I feel sad. I feel so much love.

I'm SO proud of the little boy he has become. He is so confident and sure in himself and it shows. He marched on up to those houses, with or without his cousins, and rang the door bell, practically yelled 'trick or treat' because he was so excited, said 'thank you' on his own, and even wished some people a 'happy halloween' as he ran away down the street to the next house. I was so shocked and so proud all at the same time. I felt sad because I mean, look at that BIG BOY. He is officially not my baby anymore and while it makes me so happy to see how far he's come and how much he's grown up, I can't help but be a little sad that he is so grown up. And so much love. I just want to cry when I think about how far he's come. How different this year was compared to last year. For someone with autism who should be terrible at change, he is far better at change than I am. He takes new experiences and opportunities in stride and kicks butt all the while I am so worried (for no reason!) about how he will do. He carried his own candy bag for a good hour before it got too heavy and we headed home. He beamed from ear to ear every time he went to a house and always (every time!) ran back to me to show me how much candy he got. He truly was so proud and so happy and that just makes my heart beam with joy and pride.

This is just the first holiday of many coming up and after Monday night, I CANNOT wait to continue the excitement of the holiday season with Mason this year!

[Countdown to Halloween] Carving Pumpkins!

Wednesday, October 26, 2016

Every year since Mason was born (and even before that), we've carved pumpkins. I was actually just looking through past posts the other day for a different post and found all of our past pumpkin carvings. This year I had the delusional idea that Mason would be able to help. I figured, he's four now, he should be able to help, right? Wrong. It's not that things went terribly crazy or wrong, but let's just say, he's definitely not ready.

I took him to the store to pick out what "utensil" pack we would get. It was down to Paw Patrol or Finding Dory and he chose Dory. Solid decision. So we bought the pack of carving utensils and the stencils to make Finding Dory-like pumpkins and we were on our way home. I happened to be home with Mason on this particular day because he had an appointment in the morning and then ABA in the afternoon, so I just took the whole day off. I thought it would be a fun adventure for us to carve pumpkins together.

I thought I would carve the top off Mason's pumpkin and he would scoop out the seeds and I would paint mine with the kit that I got in the dollar section at Target. Easy peasy and fun. Well, for starters, Mason HATED sticking his hand in the pumpkin to get out the seeds. I mean, I guess I can't blame him because I don't love it either. I mean it's sticky and gooey. So he refused to do that. He just kept picking up the poker and poking holes in the pumpkin. Over and over and over. I eventually had to ask him to go play with his cars or watch his iPad while I finished so the pumpkin didn't have 100 little holes in it before I was done.

I finished his pumpkin and gave it a simple little smiling face. I was going to attempt one of the Dory designs but the pumpkin was pretty thick and I didn't think the little knives would work well and I didn't think the big knife would cut small enough for the design. I clearly didn't think things fully through when buying our pumpkins.

After I finished Mason's pumpkin, I started on mine. I figured, for $3, how hard could this kit be? Wrong again. The kit came with this stencil that you were suppose to trace with marker on to the pumpkin. First of all, the stencil didn't sit flat, so I had to cut it apart and tape it to the pumpkin in pieces. Second of all, the marker bled.

After I was done with the tracing, there was paint that I was supposed to go over the letters with and then sprinkle some glitter. The paint brush was too thick for the letters so I used an old make up brush that was more the correct size. After I painted the letters, I dumped some glitter and called it good.

After I was all done with both pumpkins, I wiped off the excess glitter and brought the pumpkins outside for a little photo op. Mason was so proud of the pumpkins and had no problem cheesin' for me...

...and then I let him take a couple pictures too. He insisted.

Overall, it was a fun afternoon even though it was a little frustrating and I said no probably 100 too many times. We both had a good time spending the day together and we now have a festive looking front porch. Next time I think I will stick to the stickered pumpkin for Mason (seen above - we did a couple weeks ago) and do the carving after he's already in bed :)

[Countdown to Halloween] Baking with Pumpkin!

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

With it finally being Fall and Halloween rapidly approaching, I knew I wanted to make some sort of pumpkin recipe before Halloween came (and went). I've been pinning pumpkin recipes like crazy and I had hoped to try a new recipe this year. So, I hopped on Pinterest to see what my choices were and tried to pick just one to try.

I first wanted to make these pumpkin donuts, but I don't have a donut pan, so those were out.

Then I wanted to make these pumpkin spice banana chocolate chip blondies, but I didn't have pumpkin spice peanut butter (nor did I even know they made that!), so those were out.

Then I thought maybe I'd try some pumpkin chocolate chip cookies but I didn't have molasses, so those were out. And I went to Target to buy some cloves for these cookies, but it was literally like $4+ for a SMALL jar for me to use 1/8 of a teaspoon and there was no way I was doing that, so those were out too.

BUT I wasn't going to give up! So while I was at Target, I literally grabbed a box mix of pumpkin muffin mix and called it a day. It might be simple and out of a box, but they turned out amazing, so I'm not complaining.

Turns out, I was so excited about eating them that I... completely forgot to take any pictures of them. #bloggerfail. You'll just have to take my word for the fact that these box mix pumpkin chocolate chip muffins were amazing. So amazing in fact, that Mason practically grabbed mine out of my hand and scarfed it down himself.

On the plus side, I did take some super cute pictures of my little helper helping me mix the ingredients and put the batter into the muffin liners!

We had some leftover Paw Patrol muffin liners from his birthday (yep, three months ago) and Mason was so excited to use them for our muffins. I let him help with almost everything (he LOVES to help me bake) until things got a little too messy (read: right after this last picture). I really had to rein in my OCD because I felt like the second he got that scooper in his hand, I was doomed. I let him do a few scoops and then I (nicely) took it away from him and let him go back to playing.

Regardless of how fancy (or non-fancy) my muffins were, they were delicious and I got to have some one on one time with my little helper. And to me, that's all that matters!

[Countdown to Halloween] Pumpkin Patchin'.

Wednesday, October 12, 2016

We had planned to go to the pumpkin patch a couple weekends ago when it first opened. Scheduled temperature for the day : 102. Needless to say, we re-scheduled. Not that this weekend was much better, but I think the high was only 85-90 instead of over 100. Nevertheless, we're pretty used to doing Fall activities in the heat of Summer, so on to the pumpkin patch we went!

We met our friends there and Mason was in heaven with his BFF. Randomly he had started asking for him the day before we were going to the pumpkin patch with him so it worked out well!

We saw pumpkins. We took pictures with pumpkins. We went in the "haunted" house. Multiple times.  We rode the train. The boys in their big boy seat, together, with no parents. (We were in the seat behind.) We ran around the corn maze and got lost.

We didn't end up buying any pumpkins. We skipped the hay ride. We skipped the face painting and cookie decorating and the bounce house. And instead, we opted for lunch! It was way hotter than we'd hoped it would be and WAYYYYY more crowded than I anticipated, but! overall, we still had a great morning with Mason's BFF and his family.

I'm still hoping to hit up our other favorite pumpkin patch in the area... hopefully next weekend (this weekend Seth and I have to work... boo)!

[Countdown to Halloween] Decorating Pumpkins with Melted Crayons.

Wednesday, October 5, 2016

A couple weekends ago, I found some pumpkins at Trader Joe's that I just had to have. You know, because they're cute and small and colorful. HAD to have ;) Anyway, I knew I wanted to try to do some sort of art project with some of the mini white ones, so I got to searching Pinterest. I remembered a pin that I had pinned last year (or maybe the year before? or the year before that? ha!) that I had wanted to try -- melting crayons on top of pumpkins so they drip down and make a pretty pattern. Seemed simple enough, I thought we could try it. I should have known better, but I thought it seemed easy and surely it would be a Pinterest win, right? Wrong.

Melted Crayon Pumpkin Decorating
Adapted from Crafty Morning

Materials Needed
- white pumpkin, any size
- crayons
- glue
- hair dryer

Directions
- unwrap the crayons
- break the crayons apart
- using the glue, glue as many pieces of crayons on to the pumpkin as will fit (she suggested 16, but my pumpkins were smaller and couldn't fit as many)
- after the glue has dried, use the hair dryer to melt the crayons

A couple bits of advice... DO NOT USE CHEAP CRAYONS. You see the two pumpkins in the front? I used those cheap Paw Patrol crayons that we had. The melting was terrible and splattered all over and looked watery to me. So I re-did it and used Crayola crayons and it worked MUCH better. The melt was a bit thicker and covered the pumpkin better. So don't skimp on the crayons! Splurge that extra dollar or two to get the real thing.

Oh and DO make sure to glue the crayons down before you start. Silly me was like "why do we need to glue them down? that's a waste of time!" but turns out... if you don't glue them down, they just blow away when you turn the hair dryer on. Duh. Should have thought of that.

I had high hopes that my pumpkins would look like the one in the picture but they... don't. BUT regardless, Mason and I had a good time breaking the crayons, glueing them on to the pumpkins, and using the hair dryer. And to me, that's all that matters.
