Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Tuesday, October 6, 2015

As most of you know, or have probably heard, October is breast cancer awareness month. And for those of you know who me, or who have been reading the blog for a year or so, you know that this month holds a special place in my heart.

My mom died of breast cancer in 2003. And if you do the math... yes, I was only 18. I was a freshman in college when I got that dreaded phone call. I needed to come home. There wasn't much time left. I still remember it like it was yesterday.

me and mom - 1984

Without getting into too many personal details, she was first diagnosed when I was 11 (and my brother was 8). She went through chemo and radiation and surgeries and a double mastectomy and went into remission. Then it came back. In her lymph nodes. More chemo and more radiation and she went into remission. And then it came back in her lungs... and the doctors said there was nothing they could do.... which made me so mad. Why couldn't she get a lung transplant? Because "a lung transplant would be wasted on someone who's cancer could just come back somewhere else". Like I said, so incredibly mad.

She was 51 years young.

She got to see me graduate high school, but not my brother.
She missed my college graduation.
She's never met Seth. She couldn't be at our wedding.
She's never met Mason.

It's hard to tell from this photo but this was the memory candle that we had lit at our wedding in memory of my mom. It had her name on it and the years that she lived : 1951-2003. We got married on her birthday, November 7th, as a tribute to her and as a way to "tie her into the wedding"

It was a complete surprise to me but my friend Stacy bought me and all of the bridesmaids these little breast cancer angels and we all wore them on our dresses at the wedding.

And while I do believe that she is watching down on us everyday and has actually "attended" these events and "met" Seth and Mason, it's not the same. She was robbed of so much. It makes me tear up just thinking about it.

For breast cancer awareness month, my friend Katie (a Stella and Dot stylist) and I have teamed up to host an online Stella and Dot trunk show! This is the second annual breast cancer trunk show that she and I have hosted together.

This year, for breast cancer awareness month, Stella and Dot has come up with two beautiful bracelets. One is the "Resilience Cuff" and the other is called "Inspire" - they are both rose gold and simply stunning. They also have this gorgeous "HOPE necklace" and an engraveable survivor necklace as well.

And the best part? ALL net proceeds (100%!) of the breast cancer pieces goes toward the Noreen Fraser Foundation.  And 10% of all other purchases goes towards breast cancer awareness.

[From www.noreenfraserfoundation.org] The mission of the Noreen Fraser Foundation (NFF), a 501c3 not for profit organization based in Los Angeles, is to raise funds for breakthrough research that advances precision medicine for the prevention and treatment of women’s cancers.  Our hope is that cancer will become a manageable disease that patients will live with and not die from, until it ceases to exist.
NFF supports research for all women’s reproductive cancers (breast, ovarian, cervical and uterine/endometrial) because not only is there a strong hormonal and biological link between the women’s cancers including hereditary cancer syndromes but also because research in one type of women’s cancer oftentimes progresses research in the other types of women’s cancers. A multi-disciplinary approach and collaboration among researchers in the various fields of women’s cancers is absolutely necessary to accelerate the development of reasonable treatment options and potential cures.
While we focus on several types of cancers as opposed to just one, the research we fund is focused on making a real impact on women’s lives quickly. We feel that while a lot of money has been raised in the name of cancer, it has been divided amongst thousands of researchers and thousands of ideas diluting its impact. We believe that more money needs to be channeled to a smaller number of ideas. Focused funding and focused research will afford us the best chance to make greater strides and give this generation more than just hope to pass on to the next generation.

If you like what you see, or want to see more (spoiler alert : everything is GORGEOUS!), please feel free to shop my trunk show and help me donate money to help fund breast cancer research! (When you click the link, it will say the trunk show isn't until October 11th and while that is the official date, it is actually open right now through the end of the month - just click "shop online now".)This is the perfect opportunity to do good while adding a little sparkle in your life.

Happy shopping!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This year, for breast cancer awareness month, Stella and Dot has come up with two beautiful bracelets. One is called "Strength"- it is rose gold and simply stunning. The other is called "Inspire" and it is gold and hot pink and has a adorable elephants cut into the band.
And the best part? ALL proceeds (100%!) of the bracelets goes toward the Noreen Fraser Foundation

Five on Friday

Friday, May 16, 2014

Boy oh boy am I SO GLAD that today is FRIDAY!
This week has been crazy. I still have so much to do at work today, but knowing that it's Friday will get me through :)

ONE.
Stella and Dot Online Trunk Show.

Reminder : some exciting news! I've teamed up with one of my friends who is a Stella and Dot rep and we're going to be hosting a trunk show! Mark your calendars for May 22nd (next Thursday!)  because we're having a Stella & Dot ONLINE Trunk Show! Get cozy, grab some wine, relax and shop for the latest styles from Stella & Dot in your PJs from the comfort of your own home. And who doesn't love shopping in the comfort of our own home while sipping on a glass of wine?!
Our personal Stylist, my friend, Katie Foster, will be online to send you pictures of some style options for the season and help with any outfits you may need help styling.
Can't wait to see the collection?
I'm personally really excited about this trunk show because she is donating 10% of her commission to help support breast cancer awareness so ANYTHING you buy help this cause! As some of you know, my mom passed away from breast cancer 11 years ago so this cause is especially important to me. I've been doing breast cancer walks in the past to help support research and awareness but have been unable to now that I have Mason so this trunk show and being able to help donate means a lot to me. I am really looking forward to this! Let me know if you send the link to a friend and they shop too because then Katie will treat you to free shipping!!
TWO.
Drink for the Weekend.

I was searching on Pinterest the other night and came across these beauties : sangria in a jar. Genius. Seriously genius. I love sangria but...Seth does not. These would be perfect! I could make my own and portion them out and have one a night. Not sure why I didn't think of this earlier! The recipe sounds delicious and the idea is so smart. Can't wait to try!

THREE.
Fruit Infused Water.

This fruit infused water is inspired by my trip to the spa for Mother's Day. They had THE BEST fruit infused water there. It had watermelon, lemon, and mint. I didn't have any mint at home but the watermelon and lemon combo was so good!

FOUR.
Mani. Pedi.

Kinda loving the pink color with the accent of gold!

For Mother's Day I got a gift card to a nail salon and I could not have been more excited. I've been dying to get my nails done for a while now but haven't had time (or extra money) to do so. Today after work I fully intend on spoiling myself!

FIVE.
Costco PJ's.

(sorry for the awful, awful picture quality)

I was shopping at Costco the other day and noticed that they had Carter's pj's on sale. $6.99 instead of $8.99. I had been wanting to get some for Mason for a while now (mainly because he only has winter pj's and it is ridiculously hot here) and the fact that they were on sale was even better. They come in a 3-pack (shirt, shorts, and pants) which I LOVE because it gives me matching options when it is warmer or cooler. And with the weather we've been having, it's been super nice to have a shirt and shorts that match for Mason.

And two extra...
SIX.
Grey's Anatomy.

Did anyone watch?!?! All I can say is wow!!

SEVEN.
Birthdays.

Today is my brother-in-law's birthday (I know he's not reading but HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHAWN!) and Sunday is my niece, Emma's, birthday as well as Shawn's dad's birthday. So Saturday is birthday party central! Pretty excited to celebrate and to eat cake :)

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

ONE.
Guest Post.
Sweet Turtle Soup
I'm guest posting on Courtney's blog, Sweet Turtle Soup, today while she's on a trip to DisneyWorld with her family (lucky girl!!). Hop on over to her blog and check it out!

TWO.
Gymboree.

Shortly after I first posted about our experience with taking Mason to Gymboree, my Dad sent me these pictures of me at Gymboree when I was little. I seriously can't get over how nothing has changed!! Well, the equipment is updated a bit but it's the same idea - slides, teeter totter, the big round ball, etc. Look at how much fun I'm having. No wonder he loves going so much!
Like mother, like son!

THREE.
April Citrus Lane Box.

Better late than never (and sadly that seems to be my motto on these boxes! We love them so much but I just keep forgetting to share). The Prince's Bedtime is a book that I had never heard of before but has quickly become one of our favorites… especially to read to our little prince before his bedtime. The Green Eats tumblers have also become a favorite of Mason's. Mainly to throw on the floor or plan with on his water table rather than drinking out of, but nonetheless, he loves them! While looking for the link for those, I just noticed that they have plates and other place settings so I may have to look into getting some of those too. And then probably my favorite for Mason (and he loves them too!) are the Green Toys tools. It didn't come with the tool box, just the tools, but I love how they say what they are (especially helpful for the newbie boy mom) and are fun (and safe) to use!
The box this month also came with a coupon for a free customizable card and a sample of Meyer's dish soap.

FIVE.
Gone Too Soon.

I hate to leave this post on a sad note, but I couldn't not say anything. This week started off with lots of sad news. I don't personally know either of these families, but losing a child hits all too close to home so I can't even imagine what these families are feeling.

Sadly, Super Teddy lost his battle with Menkes on Monday (to find out more about his disease click here and here).  And then on Tuesday, I learned of Ryan's tragic death last Friday. Having a child myself (and a son no less), hits way, way too close to home. My heart breaks in a million pieces for these families. I was home with Mason on Tuesday, waiting with him to go to his appointment, when I came across the story of Ryan on Instagram. I was instantly overcome with emotion and sadness. I started crying. Mason was playing and then all of a sudden turned to me and look confused and worried about why I was crying. All I could do was pick him up, kiss him, and hug him and tell him I love him. He will never know how much he means to me and how much I love him and love being his mom.

Hug your kids. Never let go. Never take even one second with them for granted.
