Second Annual Mother's Day Mom Exchange [the goodies].

Friday, May 6, 2016

Happy Friday!!!

Today is the day that we get to share what we got our partners for the Mother's Day Mom Exchange. I've been looking forward to this day ever since we announced the exchange a few weeks ago! I just love being able to spoil someone on a holiday (or birthday) and what better way to spread the love on Mother's Day than to give each other something to make each other feel special. I can't wait to see what everyone got!

As for me, I was actually partnered with Courtney from Sweet Turtle Soup, the other host of this exchange. It totally wasn't planned, it happened by coincidence, but I was really excited to get to send something her way. Once I saw who my partner was, I knew exactly what to get her. If you are familiar with her or her blog, you know she loves Disney. She lives by DisneyWorld and goes there often. Me? I live on the other side of the country by... Disneyland! Without giving away too many details, her gift miiiiiiight be something from Disneyland, but you have to check out her blog to find out what.

My partner ended up being Sarah from Seeing All Sides. I was super excited to find out that I was paired with her because I love her and her blog and I've noticed that she has similar taste to me in things. I knew I was in for some good stuff and... she didn't disappoint!

Mason was with me when I got the gift in the mail and he literally could not wait to tear into it. I gave him the present that Sarah sent for him (so sweet!) but then he moved right on down to my presents and helped me see what was inside each of them too.

Right? Doesn't she know me so well?

First up was a gorgeous scarf! I mean, seriously, so pretty. I love the flowers and I love the blue. I don't have anything like it (which is actually shocking considering how many scarves I have) so plan to see a lot of this scarf in pictures in the future!

Next up was a bunch of fun stuff from my favorite store -- Target! She found these super cute can coolers, some fun hair ties, a list pad (perfect because I make TONS of lists!), some fun pens, and some super cute note cards. She also sent me a chocolate bar (I love chocolate!) and a Starbucks gift card (I LOVE Starbucks!).

And last but not least, she sent these cute window clings for Mason! He literally could not open them fast enough and stick them on the window.

I don't know how she did it, but she picked everything perfectly. It was as if I was at the store shopping for myself!

Thank you so much of everything, Sarah! I love it all!

[Featured On] The Anaheim Moms Blog

Thursday, May 5, 2016

I mentioned on Instagram the other day that I recently became a contributor on the Anaheim Moms Blog. I plan to share a little bit more about that in a future post, but I wanted to share with you today that my very first post is live on their blog today!

Here is a little sneak peek.

"... The days, weeks, and months went by again and we found out we were expecting a baby! SUCH A JOYOUS TIME and yet a piece of me couldn’t be 100% happy. I was about to become a mom and I didn’t have a mom to share that joy with. By now, my mom had passed away almost eight years prior. Of course I miss her and think about her daily, but it was easier. I had accepted what happened and moved on. But then things in your life happen and you’re brought right back to that moment one more time.

Being a mom is one of the BEST things that has EVER happened to me. I never knew as much joy as I did when I held my son in my arms for the very first time. I had known him for a mere two minutes and it felt like a lifetime. That moment, that day, I couldn’t physically share with my mom, but I know she was there. I know she got to experience the joy of her first grandchild being born...."

Weekending [Bachelorette Style].

Wednesday, May 4, 2016

Or should I say, semi-bachelorette style (since I'm married and not technically a bachelorette)?

This weekend was my cousin's bachelorette party. My sister in law and I are bridesmaids in her wedding at the end of the month and the bride, her other bridesmaids, and a couple friends came down to Southern California this weekend to celebrate -- the final fling before the ring!

I apologize for the picture heavy post, but really, a picture is worth a thousand words, so I'm sure the pictures can tell the story of the weekend a lot better than I can.

The girls flew down Friday morning. My sister in law and I had to work so we met up with them later that night to start the weekend off with a painting party. I'd never been to a painting party before but I'd heard of people who had done them and also I saw it on a Real Housewives of Orange County episode (quality TV I know buuuuuut once we got there, we found out that the place we were at was THE place they were at on the show - kinda cool!). The place didn't live up to the hype -- it was better! I was a bit nervous in the beginning, especially since I am a TERRIBLE artist, but she showed us a technique that helped us paint and I'm shocked to say... I am actually really impressed with myself!

They provided the canvases and the paints. We brought a little platter of food, some cupcakes and champagne since the party was around dinner time.

I made this!!!!

After painting, we went to a restaurant nearby that had bull riding (yes, you read that right, however, I was not brave enough to do the riding - if you saw my snapchats, I left that up to the bride!). They also had these ENORMOUS cotton candy's. I mean. It's bigger than me!

Saturday!!! Saturday was the day we got blow outs. Now. I've never been to a Dry Bar before. I had no idea what to expect, but it exceeded my expectations! My sister in law told me they wash your hair for you and then dry it and style it however you want. I figured, that's cool, but I didn't expect to love my hair as much as I did!

So we got to our appointment at 1pm. Like my sister in law said, the lady washed my hair and then brought me over to the styling chair to dry and style my hair. I chose long, loose curls. I cannot curl my hair to save my life so I figured I better leave it to the professionals. And let me tell you - I LOVED it. I'm addicted. I want to go back every weekend! Thank goodness it's not closer because it is relatively expensive for someone just to curl my hair.

After the Dry Bar, we walked around and did some shopping at the mall and then went home to get ready for the night. We met up for dinner later and then went to a local club. Yes, this old lady went to a club AND stayed out WAY past her bedtime! Friday night I was out and awake until 11:30pm and Saturday night I was out and awake past midnight! It was some kind of miracle. Clearly we were having too much fun!

Sunday morning I woke up before everyone else. I have no idea how this even happened since I was awake later than everyone else but come 6:36am, I was wide awake. The girls woke up with a bit of a hangover so my sister in law and I decided to take a little family adventure to the donut store since we hadn't seen the kids that much all weekend.

After our donut adventure, we met the girls by the beach for more shopping and some lunching and then headed home to be responsible adults and finish laundry and go grocery shopping for the week.

Overall, it was a super fun weekend celebrating the bride to be and in a few short weeks, we'll be heading to Northern California to celebrate her WEDDING!!!

My Journey to Motherhood.

Monday, May 2, 2016

A couple months ago, I guest posted for Whitney for her Mommylogues series. With Mother's Day being this coming weekend, I thought I'd share my post here as well.

This post was first published on Work It Mommy on February 8, 2016.

My journey to motherhood started on November 19, 2011 -- the day I found out that I was pregnant with Mason. I remember it like it was yesterday (which must be why I still remember the exact date!). The day before we had met with our photographer for a "trash the dress" session at the beach. I remember thinking that my wedding dress felt a little tighter than normal, but I attributed that to the fact that it had been a year and I'm sure I gained some weight since then. We had just celebrated our first wedding anniversary on November 7th and I thought it would be fun to do a little "trash the dress" session to celebrate.

The next morning I realized just how late I was and decided to take a pregnancy test. And sure enough those two pink lines appeared! I'm pregnant! I ran into the bedroom, shook (my husband) Seth awake, and shoved the stick that I had just peed on right into his face. Romantic, I know. And then we just stared at each other in disbelief. We had been trying so it's not like it was a big surprise to us, but at the same time, it was a surprise. I mean, you never really know when it will happen!

After that, I texted my sister in law and my best friend a picture of the pregnancy test (TMI, I know, sorry girls!) to tell them the good news. Although it had been approximately 22 minutes (I'm sure) since I had taken the pregnancy test, I had to tell someone! I'm horrible at keeping secrets.

I wish I had started my blog back then so I would have my pregnancy documented (especially since I'm 99% sure that Mason will be our only one (more on that later) but I can't say 100% for sure so I have to leave the 1% open to potentially change my mind!) but I didn't end up starting it until after he was born in 2012. Instead, I documented my pregnancy with weekly bump pictures. I'd post them to Facebook so everyone could see the progress and then once I was on maternity leave, I scrapbooked them and put them into a little photo album.

Mason was born in July of 2012 (you can read his birth story here) and I was overjoyed to finally be a mom! Everything went as smooth as possible and after a few days in the hospital, we were on our way home as a family of three! I felt extremely unprepared to be in charge of this baby especially since I knew nothing about babies, but like they say, your motherly instinct takes over and you just know what to do.

The first few days at home were great. I was having some trouble with breastfeeding (more on that here) but made an appointment with the lactation consultant to discuss my concerns and figured everything would be fine. I was wrong. Long story short (long story here), I couldn't breastfeed Mason. I couldn't produce enough milk to sustain him and he wasn't getting anything. I tried pumping and would get maybe 2 oz after each 20 minute pumping session. It was torture. So, ultimately I decided that the health and wellbeing of my child was most important and we switched to formula. This didn't come without some challenges though and we later found out Mason had silent reflux.  Silent reflux is like regular reflux but instead of throwing it up, he would swallow it. So it hurt coming up and hurt going down. He would cry in pain and arch his back every time he ate. It was AWFUL. So after talking to one of my friends, I finally figured out what the problem was, spoke to Mason's pediatrician and we got him some liquid gold (aka the most expensive formula ever - Similac Alimentum) and everything went a lot more smoothly and I had my happy baby back!

The months went on and I adjusted to being back at work and we seemed to finally be in a good groove. I never thought of myself as a boy mom, but once Mason was born, I couldn't picture myself any other way. I was embracing the cars, planes, trains, and trucks, and loving every minute of it.

We celebrated Mason's first birthday, celebrated holidays, celebrated New Year's, celebrated his second birthday, celebrated holidays, and celebrated another New Year's.

By now it was 2015 and Mason was 2 1/2. We've noticed that he's not necessarily at the same stage on certain things as other kids his age, specifically talking. I didn't really think anything of it, I just thought he was a late talker. He was late to walk, so I just assumed he was late to talk too. Boys are lazy like that sometimes, right? Or so I thought.

Then came April 2015 and my whole world was turned upside down. We found out that the reason that Mason had a speech delay was because he has autism. The moment that the doctor said those words to me, my head started spinning. Not in a bad way. I never, ever, ever thought any different of my sweet and perfect boy, but I just had NO idea what this meant for him and our family. I was so overwhelmed with all the information that they gave us and didn't know what to do with it all. Thankfully I had an amazing resource to turn to or I don't know what I would have done. She helped me and educated me so much.

A month later, I wrote this letter to Mason.

An excerpt from it :
"...This diagnosis does not define you. You are still the same sweet, loving, caring, amazing little boy that we've always known. You are friendly, you are outgoing, you are fearless. You are a joy to be around. And your dad and I... we will make sure we give you every tool you need to grow, learn, and thrive. I can't wait to enroll you in kindergarten and cry my eyes out that my little boy is growing up too fast. I can't wait to see you make your first science fair project. I can't wait to see you play sports. I can't wait to see you graduate high school and to help you move into a dorm at college and then really cry my eyes out that my little boy really is ALL grown up. And furthermore, I can't wait to meet the girl you know you are going to marry and then walk you down the aisle to wait for her. One day (long, LONG from now), you will make me a Grandma and make me the happiest I've ever been to hold a baby since July 18, 2012, the day you were born.

I never thought of myself as a parent of a child with special needs. But here we are, here I am. A parent of a child with autism. And while that might be true and we might have some hurdles we need to jump over, you, your dad, and I are no different than we were on April 8. And I intend to treat you exactly the same way I did on that day from this day forward. I am constantly in awe and inspired by you. You make me want to be a better mama. I love you more with every day that passes...."

To this day, I still cry when I read the letter I wrote him. And to this day, every single word is still true. Our life is definitely a lot different today than it was on April 8, 2015 (the day before he was diagnosed), but all for the better. He has since gotten tubes in his ears and had his adenoids removed. He has started talking SO much more and I could not be more proud. He knows all his (primary) colors and can say them out loud (sound them out - bew for blue, gree for green, reh for red, etc) and identify them on paper. He knows the numbers from 1 to 10 [updated 5/2016 : numbers from 1 to 30!] forwards and backwards. He knows tons of sign language. He knows how to spell his name (Mmmm - Ahhh - Sssss - Ohhh - Nnnn). He can identify all the basic shapes. He can do the whole alphabet in sign language and can say the letters (sounding them out) from A to F but gets more letters daily [updated 5/2016 : he now knows letters A to Z and the whole ABC song]. He understands way more than he can communicate verbally. And so, so much more. He is loved by everyone at school and is a joy to be around. He has great social skills and good eye contact. He is growing and thriving and I couldn't be more proud.

Though this is definitely not how I pictured my life, I have learned so much from Mason and wouldn't change a thing. Sure it can be more challenging, more stressful, and definitely more expensive at times, but at the same time, I am learning so much just seeing life through his eyes. He lights up with joy when I ask him to help me bake cookies. He screams "YEAH!" when I ask him if he wants to go over to his best friend's house. And he is a total pain in the butt sometimes when he steals my drinks, eats the food off my plate, and tells me what to do. But he is the most loving little kid. And even though he can't use words to tell me that he loves me yet, I know he does. He shows me through sign language and through the huge, wet kisses he gives me every morning, every day when I drop him off at preschool, and every night before bed.

This is our story, my journey through motherhood, and I can't wait to see how the story continues!

The Guys Behind the Blog // April Edition.

Friday, April 29, 2016

Last year, I found out through Crystal that Betsy from Heavens to Betsy had this super cool series called The Guys Behind the Blog. Unfortunately it was a little too late to join for March 2015 but I joined in April and have been ever since! While I do talk about Seth often, I don't really know if you all know him very well. Enter : this series. Every month Betsy has different prompts that the guys behind the blog answer.

For April, Laura Jean and Betsy came up with questions about family and childhood! Here are the questions:

1 // In what ways are you the same as your childhood self?
I still enjoy playing baseball. I still get so involved in a TV show that I'm watching that I tune out my surroundings. And I still enjoy singing and rocking out in the car - but now with my little side kick Mason!

2 // What does family mean to you?
Everything.

3 // How would your family or closest friends describe you?
Weird. Talkative. Nerdy. Caring. Loyal. Loving.

4 // What’s your fondest childhood memory?
Swimming with dolphins.
Where? When? Age? Details?
I don't know!
Rolls eyes.
It was a pilot program at Sea World before they developed the program that they have in place now. I was probably thirteen years old. Besides wanting to be a professional baseball player, becoming a dolphin trainer was what I thought I wanted to be when I grew up.

It's amazing the information you can get out of him when you start throwing out random questions!

5 // What words of wisdom would you pass on to your childhood self?
Don't procrastine. It sets you up for bad habits later on in life.

And there you have it! Thanks for playing along again Seth!
