Mason's IKEA Picture Ledge Book Shelves

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

Speaking of reading yesterday, I've been meaning to post about these books shelves for F.O.R.E.V.E.R. I'm ashamed to say I started this post MONTHS ago and just now got around to posting it. #bloggerfail

Anyway, here we are!

I got lots of questions back at Christmas time when I posted this picture of Mason's 25 Days of Christmas Books.

So I wanted to share a little bit about Mason's book shelf.

Honestly, it was SO easy and I LOVE the way it looks! It is my favorite thing in Mason's room. I love that the books are at his height and he can get down whatever book he wants to look at/read. An added plus is that it also it makes for nice decoration and fills the wall.

The ledges are from IKEA and they come in black and white. Each color comes in two sizes. The ones we have hanging in Mason's room are the longer ones and are no longer available at the store or online (boo!). We bought them a good four or five years ago and it looks like they discontinued that size. BUT I will tell you that we also have many of each of the other sizes (the long and the short) and we LOVE them. So I think you can make any size work.

My sister-in-law recently bought some of the longer size of the white ones and hung them in my niece's play room and they look amazing. So I definitely think no matter what size or color you get, they will look great and be fully functional.

So, without further ado, here is how his room looks during non-holiday times, or 11 months out of the year.

And just for fun, in case you think my kid is super neat and the photos above are how his room usually looks...

I actually witnessed this happening the other day. I put the books up and just as I was almost done... Mason sticks his arm behind the top row and knocks 10 books off. Then a few more and a few more and does the same to the bottom row. Oh, Mason, it's a good thing you're so cute... =P

  1. Haha about how they normally look! I'm impressed he doesn't rip up the paper page books. Noah's good when we read those with him now but I still keep them up high otherwise because I don't completely trust him yet. We got the smaller ledges thinking we'd do one on top of the other and ended up fitting them together next to each other. I wish I just bought the longer one but driving back to return them didn't sound fun ;) oh well, they still hold up the books.

  2. Yes, the books will end up on the floor more times than none, but the concept is adorable. Great job and don't you just ove IKEA!!

  3. I can fully picture the arm down the books to knock them all down! These are so cute! And genius for being at his level!

  4. We have just enough room to shove all of Aria's books in a little floor basket I picked up. So if her collection grows anymore we are out of luck! I've seen the ikea picture ledge as book shelves for years and all over - so we may need to go with those! And I love how clean and not messy children are, right? delightful creatures.

  5. I love that you put them at his height! It makes it so much easier for him to be interested in books when they are easily accessible. What are you planning on doing with them when he's bigger?

  6. I appreciate the real life picture at the end :) I would love something like this in the boys' room, but there isn't room for it, so they have a normal shelf which usually looks like a tornado hit it... but at least they love books, right!?

  8. Ha, I love the last picture!! I feel like I am constantly organizing books and toys! We got some IKEA ledges for Louise's nursery, and I can't wait to put them up! I got white and plan to paint them, but we'll see...I've been saying I'll tackle that for over a month now!! :)

  9. Haha, stinker!! I LOLed picturing Mason knocking off all the books as you are trying to make them all picture perfect. Sorry. :)
Love those ledges (and the owl prints), they look so great and I love that they're right at kid level. I'm thinking about adding some to our playroom cause I especially like the idea of displaying all the books we love.

  11. I wish Lily had a place in her room for something like this. It's perfect. Maybe we will tackle this as a diy in the playroom?

  12. I need these!!! It is crazy how much of a mess that a kid can make!

  13. I have those Ribba shelves (in white) in the girls room for photos (so boring, am I right? haha) Question though, do the books stay put once shelved? I read on another blog that the books don't balance nicely and topple off (does that make sense?) and I have been hesitant to purchase more for this reason. Of course I guess I could always try it out myself but then I'd have to climb into the crib and I'm lazy ;)

  15. I love this! I know I looked for these at Ikea back when I was pregnant with my son and they were always sold out. I am definitely going to have to go again! These are awesome!

  17. Cute shelf! IKEA always has the best stuff! They are building one in STL and I can't wait for it to open this fall!

  18. We definitely need to make an IKEA run! Mason's books are starting to take up too much room on his shelf, but we have plenty of wall space. I love Mason's little reading nook and those pillows are great!

  19. That's how our book ledges usually look too! Haha we have the spice racks that I use at ledges though since these were out when we went! But his book collection is amazing! Such a lucky little guy!
