[Goals] 2014 Goal Recap and 2015 Goals

Tuesday, January 6, 2015

I don't like making New Years Resolutions. Why? Because I break them. every.single.time. I feel like there is so much pressure to accomplish them, and who needs more pressure in their life. So instead, I like to set goals for myself. What is the difference between a goal and a resolution? Beats me, but call me crazy, I feel like goals are... different and more attainable.

Anyway, in 2014 I set a couple goals for myself in hope of making 2014 count.

Last January I said I wanted to make 2014 count by :
- spending more time with my family - accomplished
- while also spending more time with my friends and people who are important to me - partially accomplished
- pick and choose my battles - accomplished
- make more of an effort - in a way I'd say accomplished, but in a way not. I've added some things to this year's goals to really get myself into this mindset
- be more organized and plan ahead - definitely tried! I've got meal planning for the week down, but there's definitely parts of this I could continue to work on.
- try new things - partially accomplished
- live more in the moment - partially accomplished
- have more date nights - partially accomplished. Plan to make this happen FOR SURE this year.

I'd say I did pretty good. I give myself a solid B+.

My word for 2014 was : balance. And I'm disappointed to say... I do not think I achieved the balance that I had hoped for. I think I was doing pretty good throughout the year but then come the holidays, I was feeling wayyyyyy overwhelmed.

So, this year I would like to set some new goals for myself.

2015 Goals :
- take Mason to at least one new park a month and at least one park a week - we have SO many parks around us that Mason could explore. We get in such a rut and just take him to the little one across the street (which is great and all but kinda small and boring). I want to let him explore at least one new park per month which is a goal of visiting 12 new parks this year.
- continue Mason's swim lessons - we just got bumped up to intermediate this past weekend (woohoo!) and he's been doing SO well and LOVING his lessons the past 6 months that we've been taking him. I want to keep it up and encourage his love of the water this coming year.
- assess Mason's skills and determine if enrolling him in a kids soccer class would be good - I found a kids soccer class that I think would be fun for Mason, but I'm not sure if he is coordinated enough for it to be practical.
- date my husband at least once a month - Once a month. Just Seth and I. And I have a plan for this to happen (more to come soon!)
- decrease screen time
- budget - oy. I'm HORRIBLE at this. I know what bills need to be paid when, but sometimes things sneak up and there's trouble. I really want to try to budget this year. If anyone has advice (or a template!) on how I can successfully do this, please do share!
- come up with a weekly or monthly rotation of meals and stick to it - I like routine. And while I don't like eating the same thing every day, I would like to be able to budget better for food and having a weekly (or even monthly) rotation would make this easier. I want to continue to meal plan and start to budget better.
- set up a cleaning schedule and stick to it - I wouldn't say my house is clean, but I wouldn't say it's a pig sty either. It's definitely clean enough to live in but I have a bad habit of printing things or getting magazines in the mail or bills or whatever and letting them pile up. It's time to find a home for everything and keep them there. It's also time to set a cleaning schedule (i.e. Mondays are for cleaning the bathrooms, Tuesdays are for vacuuming, etc) so things actually get done. I often push cleaning off on to the weekends and weekends are for family time, not for cleaning. I need a plan.
- spring (or more winter?) clean - get rid of the clutter and toys that Mason has outgrown and donate. Get rid of clutter I don't need. Get rid of that stuff that I "might wear again" or "might want to use again" or "Mason might want to play with again". I won't and haven't and he doesn't need it. Donate donate donate!
- send more snail mail
- re-do pictures in house and get some canvases printed and hung - I have so many pictures that I want to hang, artwork that Mason has made that I would like to display, and boxes of old pictures in frames that I don't really want anymore. Time to FINALLY unpack that last box (from when we moved almost 2 years ago - eeekkk!) and put those frames to good use.
- go on a family walk at least once a week - ideally I'd like to say a couple nights a week but with it getting so dark so early (like before I even get home from work) I'd like to set a goal of once a week until daylight savings time and then at least twice a week once it's lighter longer.

The list could go on and on, but these are the things I'd really like to focus on. I think it would make our life easier, more organized, and more on track with goals we have for the future.

I'm not sure that I have a word for 2015 though. I guess if I had to pick one, I'd like to try balance again. I think I have a pretty good plan to make it happen this year, but only time will tell :)

I'd like to hold myself accountable this year and recap my goal progress on the last Friday of every month. I think that was part of my problem last year. I wrote a post, made a commitment to myself, and then never referred back to it or tracked my progress. While I don't have a specific timeline for these things, I would like to recap my progress monthly.

So, that's it! My goals for 2015. I think they are attainable and I look forward to working on them.

Happy, happy new year! Much health, happiness and prosperity this year!

  1. Those are all great goals! Are you doing the year of dates thing? That what Chris and I did last year and we loved it. We let it slip at the end of the year when we got too busy.

Balance is so hard. I think it's hard to be balanced all the time. I think different things need to be the priority at different times and that's okay. But I like the idea of less screen time and trying out more parks! I might have to steal those goals for future months :)

  2. Love these goals. We have a budget.... I usually procrastinate it until I want to scream though. UGH. I need a goal of not procrastinating the budget so much. I just made an excel type document on google sheets. Can't wait to hear about your date night plans!

  3. Those are great goals! :) Many of which I am aiming for too. I have tried so many cleaning schedules in the past and never stick to them. This year! We too have had stuff in our basement from when we moved (almost 5 years ago!) Time to get rid of clutter and useless 'stuff'!

  4. Love these goals! I can't wait to start Liam in sports, but I think we are going to hold off a bit. We are trying to introduce him to as many as we xan on our own and see where his interests lie! I can't wait to hear how Mason does!

  5. Can I just copy all your goals? I have a major hang up on the park. My husband takes lex for hours-- but I hate going! How lame is that? And mason is TOTALLY a ready for soccer. He would love it! Sign that boy up ASAP!

  10. We have a lot of the same goals! My husband and I are doing weekly planning every Sunday night ...sitting down and talking about the finances for the week, meals and our schedules. It's been helpful so far! :) Can't wait to follow along and see how you date your husband! I need help in that area!

  11. What great goals (I have a few of the same).
Dave Ramsey has an amazing budget sheet that my husband and I use each month. All you have to do is google Dave Ramsey Budget Sheet and it should pop up. Basically it is divided into categories and you allot a set amount of money for each category. Very easy to use, and helpful to see where we are spending too much money.
