[Stitch Fix] Fix #1

Wednesday, October 14, 2015

You guys. My first Stitch Fix arrived in the mail yesterday and I COULD NOT have been more excited. I've been wanting to try the service for forever and when I got some gift cards for my birthday, I knew it was time to try!

In case you haven't heard of Stitch Fix, it's basically a personal shopping service. You fill out your online profile by answering some questions about likes/dislikes, style, sizing, etc and then can write a note about what you're interested in as well as link a Pinterest style board to help your stylist know what you're looking for and what you're style is. Then your personal stylist gathers some items that she thinks you'd like and sends them to you. You try them on in the comfort of your own home and decide what you do and don't want to keep and then you have three days to send back whatever you don't want. Easy peasy! The styling fee is $20 and if you send back all the items, you lose the $20. If you keep one (or more) items, they deduct the $20 styling fee from your total and you pay the difference. And if you keep all five items, they deduct the $20 from the total and you get a 25% discount on all the items. Pretty great! If you're interested in signing up, if you want to use my referral code then I'll get small credit to my account and would be forever grateful.

Now... on to my first fix! (I decided to include as much information as possible in case my stylist (hi Amy!) reads my blog and/or in case I could help other's with sizing and stuff for their potential future fixes)

Market & Spruce | Avah Knit Top | Size : M | $58.00

I loved the style of this top but hated the print. Well, hated the print on me. The more I look at it in pictures, the more I like it a little, but in person it was just too much for me. If you've been reading the blog for any amount of time, you'll notice that I wear very "quiet" colors and mostly plain things. I'd love to get a top with a print on it, but this one was too loud for me. I did love the way it fit like a dolman sleeve shirt, the sizing was perfect, and the sleeve length was great, but the print is what made up my mind.

Verdict : Returned.

Nakamol | Zelia Beaded Cord Bracelet | $44.00

I loved the style and the color of this bracelet. The way it tied was especially interesting and different from anything that I have now. Unfortunately I don't really wear jewelry enough to justify the cost. Had I wanted to keep the other four items, I probably would have kept this to get the discount, but since I didn't, back it went.

Verdict : Returned.

Pixley | Dido Mixed Print Knit Top | Size : M | $58.00

The pictures make the shirt look kind of purple-y but it was definitely a dark, navy blue. I really, really liked the style and the colors of the shirt and especially liked that it was different than anything I currently have in my closet. I've seen this style around, at places like Anthro, and I love it and was excited to get one to try in my fix. Unfortunately I found the shirt to be a little big and when I turned to the side, it looked like a parachute. I didn't think it was overly flattering from the front, though I do love the way it looks from the back. I tried it on with leggings in hopes that maybe it just looked bad with my jeans, but it was too short for leggings and I opted to try again with the jeans. I think if I had it in a size small, it would have been better.

Verdict : Returned.

Market & Spruce | Alan French Terry Asymmetrical Zip Cardigan |
Size : M | $68.00

When I saw this in the box, I was excited. I've been eyeing and pinning styles like this for a jacket. I feel like the name cardigan is not accurate for this because when I think of cardigan, I think of a sweat-like material, (maybe that's just me?) but this was more of a stretchy, jacket material. When I un-zipped it, I liked the way it draped and it definitely reminded me of a sweater. But then I zipped it up and I hated it. The material was stretchy and not very flattering and the zipper was hard to zipper (like it would get stuck). Then there was the funny part that stuck out the bottom when I zipped it as well as the top part than hung in a way I didn't like. Overall, I like the color and like the idea of it, but I just didn't find it to be very flattering.

Verdict : Returned.

Just Black | Adorra Skinny Jeans | Size : 10 | $88.00

I was most excited about the jeans! In these pictures they look almost black, and they are very dark, but they are definitely a dark blue denim and not black. I've been having the hardest time jeans shopping for myself and in everyone else's fixes, they seem to get the perfect fitting jeans so I was excited for these. I've been wanting some skinny jeans and these fit the bill. The length was perfect and they easily fit in my boots when I tried them on. Only problem was... a little tight in the waist. Now I know they are stretchy but if they make you feel like major muffin top when you put them on, odds are good it won't stretch enough to make me feel comfortable later in the day. If it was one size up, I'd totally keep these. I wish you could keep but exchange sizes.

Verdict : Returned.

So, overall, I kept nothing. Boo. And I lost the $20 styling fee. BUT I don't consider this a loss! While I am sad that I kept nothing, I am very hopeful for my next fix (which I already scheduled for in two weeks!). The styles were almost spot on to things I'd like. The sizes fit pretty well. So I'd say my stylist did a great job for never having styled me or seen me in person before. This was all based on my style profile and my Pinterest boards. I tried to give as detailed of feedback as possible so hopefully my next fix will be ever better!

Do you agree with my choices? Would you have kept any of the items?

  1. That's too bad you didn't like anything to keep. I got that cardigan in my first stitch too! I don't like it zipped up either but I honestly never zip up any of my cardigans so it didn't bother me. I wore it all the time and got a lot of compliments on it. Hopefully the next shipment is better for you!

  2. Hate that you didn't like anything. Honestly I think that's why I'm so hesitant...I'm kind of a cheap-o! Ha!

Side note: Paw Patrol is on Zulily today!

  3. I got that same cardigan and was SO EXCITED because I wanted it so badly, but I returned it, too!! BUT I just found the same one (lighter material) at Forever 21...go buy it! I LOVE IT! And it's way cheaper. :) I hate when I get super excited for stuff in my box then try it on and it doesn't work. Bummer that you didn't keep anything, but there's always next time. :)

  4. Boo that nothing you got you liked, but the fact that she was so spot on for sizes is really good. I don't know if I'd like stitch fix I'd hate to pay $20 for nothing that I would keep.

  5. So I got that cardigan a while ago and HATED it, so it's funny that you didn't like it either! I actually think the jeans look great on you!

Also, Stitch Fix will do exchanges on size if they have it in stock, but they don't allow returns/exchanges on things you've exchanged. Just email them asking if they have the next size up/down and they're super helpful! Let me know if you want any more tips!

Oh, and I was going to tell you, but someone already did above...Paw Patrol on zulily today!

    1. Yes! I came here to say this. Their customer service is amazing and they want you to buy their items! So if they have an item you love in a different size they'll be happy to send it to you.

  6. haha okay so that "cardigan" thing is pretty much the ugliest thing I've ever seen when you zip it up. What the heck is that?!?

I like everything else though! Good picks too bad they were all just off a bit. I really like the two color shirt thing...let me scroll back up...the mixed print one! But yeah too big from the side, the back is super cute though. Just walk backwards? Fingers crossed for the next one! I'd love to try stitch fix but I think it would be hard to find something I loved in one size, ya know. They should send five things and in three sizes all around your typical size. Then send back what doesn't fit!

  7. Darn about not keeping anything. I wish that polka dot top would have been smaller because it's so cute! Hope your next fix is a hit!

  8. I liked that cardigan! But, I don't like the prices on anything I see from Stitch fix posts! I mean, $40 for a bracelet?!?

  9. Fun!! Yes, I like the idea/styles of the pieces too, so that's good. I bet your next one will be better. I like the knit top and the 'cardigan', those are totally my style too. Can't wait to see the next one!! :) Maybe pin these images and your comments so the stylist can see and/or send her a link to this post too?!

  10. I think you made a wise decision, The polka-dot top was pretty cute, but agree it just looks way to baggy. Hopefully next time will go better!

  11. I got a similar cardigan/jacket last year and I hated it. It just fit all wrong!! The polka dot top is super cute, but maybe a tad big. And I agree about their jewelry--cute, but not worth the money! Bummer to not keeping anything, but yay for another fix in just two weeks!!

  12. I had the same experience as you with Stitch Fix, I didn't end up keeping anything and lost the $20 and I think I was just mad that I wasted $20 because I couldn't keep anything...but I might try it out again...now that they have petite sizing.

  13. Bummer you didn't keep anything, but I understand. If it's not perfect than it isn't worth keeping. I liked the navy and yellow polka dot style. I have one from Anthropologie and love it. :) Next time you will have successes I'm sure.

  14. Oh boo! I'm so sorry nothing worked for you. Such a bummer! I know how excited you were to get this too. Hopefully they'll take excellent notes on this post and really nail the next one. Sorry!

  15. I like the zip cardigan but you're right that it's more cute open. Hopefully the next box will be better!

  16. I got that cardi in my second fix (only it was black) and it was just ridiculous. It fit weird looked horrible zipped up - if I could even get the damn zipper to work!! Oh it was a mess!!! It's only redeeming quality was that it had pockets. I agree I wouldn't call it a cardi - a jacket is more fitting.

  17. I love the idea and look of the Dido Mixed Print Knit Top; too bad it wasn't longer because I think it would have been perfect with leggings!

  18. That's too bad nothing worked out. I like that zipper jacket...totally wouldn't call it a cardi either. I think of a sweater when I think cardigan. Hopefully you'll have better luck next time!

  19. Bummer that nothing quite worked out. I love that bracelet but I hardly ever remember to wear jewelry so it would've had to be like a third the price for me to consider it. I love how asymmetrical things look in theory, but I agree, they never look right when you try them on. Better luck next time!

  20. Your super serious clothes trying on face has me laughing. You are always smiling in your pictures and you look so unhappy about these clothes. If they don't make you smile, send them back!

  21. I liked the mixed print top on you and the cardigan unzipped, but if youre not comfortable (and comfort is my only concern when getting dressed) than you did the right thing by returning. Better luck next time!!!

  22. What a bummer! I had one fix (my 2nd or third) where I didn't keep a thing. My best advice is to only pin stitch fix items. Than you can have an idea of what you may actually receive. My fixes have drastically improved since I started doing that!

  23. I've been dying to get to this post!! I love the idea behind all the pieces, but boo that none worked out.
    Next time!
I told Scott when I signed up to think of the $20 styling fee like this: it's about the equivalent of the gas money, Starbucks, and probably Annie's pretzel I would have spent going shopping at a mall. :)

  24. I'm so sorry nothing worked out this time! Hopefully they will get you some great pieces next time. In my experience, it is always hit or miss, but I usually end up liking one thing a lot!

  25. I got the Pixley top in white and grey and absolutely love it. Too bad the sizing wasn't right! I hope your next fix is awesome!

  26. Too bad the sizing was off! The jeans are very cute. I just received my first fix since having a baby and it was hit and miss. It gets better the more you order :)

  27. Just an FYI you can exchange sizes. You just have to contact customer service. They will send you the size if they have it. The email is on stitch fix website and they are very helpful. Try exchanging next fix if you like something that doesn't fit
