[Beer Advent Calendar Follow Up] So... How did I do?

Wednesday, February 3, 2016

I know you're all dying to know how Seth liked his beer advent calendar (or maybe you've forgotten about it by now since it is now February and I shared the beer advent calendar that I made for Seth wayyyyyy back in December). Regardless, I thought I'd share with you today, before Valentine's Day, in case you're looking for a Valentine's Day present that your husband is sure to love : beer!

I swear if I can't think of anything else to get Seth, my go to is beer. They have a mix and match, make your own 6 pack at Total Wine and More (if you have one nearby, I highly recommend it!) that I love to make for him for Father's Day, his birthday, and now Christmas! The beer selection is a little (read : extremely) overwhelming for me and I literally just go to the sections that I know he likes and randomly choose which ones have good ratings (very technical, I know). I thought I'd do a little recap on the beers I got, in case your husband likes the same kind of beer too, and you want to pick some up for him as a gift.

So... how did I do on my beer selection for Seth? Well, why not go straight to the source! I have a special guest post for you today. So without further ado, here is Seth to tell you how he liked his Christmas present!

24 Days of BEER!!! The much anticipated follow-up to the best Christmas present of 2015 :  the BEER ADVENT CALENDAR.  If you haven’t figured out by now that I like beer you probably haven’t been closely reading Liz’s blog and her Guy Behind the Blog series.  Well let me give you a hint… I like beer!!! Over the past few years, Liz has surprised me with random picked six packs of craft beer for my birthday and different holidays.  And this time she took it to a whole other level with the home made advent calendar full of beer surprises. Everyday I got to unwrap a new beer surprise, put it in the fridge, and enjoy it later.  And the fact that Liz was able to pick out such a wide variety of beers (including lots that I’ve never had before) made it extra exciting. Here are the beers that she gave me and the order that I opened them in.

Day 1: Ommegang – Abby Ale
Day 2: Belhaven – Scottish Ale
Day 3: Ballast Point – Dorado
Day 4: Small Town – Not Your Fathers Root Beer
Day 5: Deschutes – River Ale
Day 6: Paulaner – Oktoberfest Marzen
Day 7: Deschutes – Jubelale
Day 8: Deschutes – Fresh Squeezed IPA
Day 9: Left Coast – Hop Juice
Day 10: Unibroue – La Fin Du Monde
Day 11: Gordon Biersch – Marzen
Day 12: Ohara’s – Irish Stout
Day 13: Hangar 24 – Octoberfest
Day 14: Stone – Coffee Milk Stout
Day 15: Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery – India Ale
Day 16: Ayinger -  Brauweisse
Day 17: New Belgium – Slow Ride
Day 18: Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery – Organic Pale Ale
Day 19: Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery – Winter Welcome Ale
Day 20: Weihenstephaner – Hefe Weissbier
Day 21: Ommegang – Hop House
Day 22: Hacker-Pschorr – Original Oktoberfest
Day 23: Dog Fish Head – Palo Santo Marron
Day 24: Birra Moretti – Premium Lager

I know there are tons of different beers to choose from and a wide variety of different styles. With the ever-growing craft brew popularity, it can be daunting to make a selection, especially if you wander into places like Total Wine and More or BevMo.  I don’t know how Liz does it but every time she surprises me with beer, she never seems to pick any that I don’t like.

Let me start by saying, I have become a beer snob (and proud of it) and have developed a fondness for almost anything IPA. So, for my taste buds, I like it when my beer is hoppy, crisp, and strong.  But I also like it when its dark, rich, and barrel aged as well.  So here are my top five beers from my 24 Days of BEER!!! (By the way this was extremely hard to narrow down)

1Dog Fish Head – Palo Santo Marron : this is a 12% abv Imperial Double Brown Ale out of Milton, Deleware.

2. Ommegang – Abbey Ale : this is an 8.2% abv Belgian Dubbel out of Cooperstown, New York.

3. Deschutes – Jubelale (seasonal) : this is a 6.7% abv Winter Ale out of Bend, Oregon.

4. Unibroue – La Fin Du Monde : this is a 9% abv Belgian Tripel out of Chambly, Quebec

5. Left Coast – Hop Juice : this is a 9.7% abv Imperial Double Ale out of San Clemente, California.

I have to say this was a pretty awesome gift from my wife and I can’t wait to see what she surprises me with next! :)

And there you have it! If your husband likes similar beer to mine, pick up a couple of the above mentioned beers and you'll have yourself one happy husband. And if you're looking for other recommendations, feel free to email me (whenever - not necessarily just for Valentine's Day gift giving) and I can ask Seth what he would recommend. He's definitely no expert, but he does know what he likes and could probably recommend a few good beers for your husband to try.

Happy shopping and drinking!

  6. So much fun. I totally want to put one of these together for Russ. Side note there is a local brewery here (called Mothers) that makes this beer called MILF (I know, I know) But man, I couldn't help but think how much Seth would love it. I wonder if you can mail beer via UPS, lololol. I can't see that working out very good.

  7. Liz! You did an awesome job with this one! I may have to make mix and match for Valentine's Day for Scott (if he's actually home)! He loves to try new beers (which is why our husbands get along so well), and I know six different beers would be perfect for the 14th!

  15. I've been to the DogFish Head Brewery when we lived in Delaware. Best is not my thing, but it was still a sweet brewery. So yay Delaware!
