Foodie for a Year : February [a Valentine's Day recipe]

Tuesday, February 2, 2016

The recipe I'm planning to share today is not your typical Valentine's Day recipe. It's not pink. It's not sweet. And it's not a baked good. I know, you must be really excited with that build up! But hear me out. My thought process was trying to think of something that would be good for Valentine's Day no matter what day of the week it fell on. This year it happens to fall on a Sunday, a weekend day, where we can all celebrate all day. However, next year, when Valentine's Day falls on a week night, a night after a long day of work, I wanted something that could be festive and easily made after a day away from the house.

Homemade pizza with heart shaped pepperonis!

Being a working mom, when holidays fall on week days, I don't have much opportunity to celebrate except for at night/dinner, so I try to think of festive meals to still incorporate some sort of celebration. We've been loving to make homemade pizzas on the BBQ recently so I incorporated the holiday in by cutting the pepperonis in to the shape of a heart. This recipe is super easy, pretty fast, and can easily be prepped the night before, if necessary.

There are only 4 ingredients : pizza crust, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni.

Start by pulling all of the pepperonis out of the package. Grab your kitchen scissors.

I cut 2-3 pepperonis at a time, but you could easily do more or less, whatever you feel comfortable with.

Start by making one small cut into the pepperoni.

Then make another cut into the pepperoni. This cut will connect to the other one and make a triangle.

I then very slightly rounded the top corners to make it look more like a heart. (You could do more if you wanted, but I didn't want to waste too much of the pepperoni by cutting it off.)

Have your little helper spread some sauce on the pizza crust. Add some cheese and then top with pepperoni. We pre-cooked the pizza crust on the BBQ (similar to these instructions), but you could easily just follow the instructions on the package as well.

Pop the pizza back on the BBQ to melt the cheese and you're all set!
