[Fall Bucket List] Leaf Art

Tuesday, October 21, 2014

This past weekend, Seth had to work at the swap meet.
Mason and I waved bye bye to daddy and were ready to start our weekend together.

Saturday, we played together for a little while before it was time for Papa to come over and for me to go pick up Ally from the airport. She had flown into town for my mother-in-law's surprise birthday party that we were having that day. So, I passed the baton and I was on my way. I got Ally and we headed to Fashion Island for the party. Shortly after we got there, my sister-in-law and cousin arrived and we all decorated for the party. They picked out the most gorgeous table settings and the place looked beautiful. My mother-in-law arrived and was thoroughly SURPRISED! Seriously. SO SURPRISED. Had no idea surprised.
SUCCESS!

We're still so amazed we were able to pull it off so successfully since her sisters had flown into town and she knew that her niece was there. But what can we say, we're good :)
(aka they are good. thankfully they didn't make me lie about anything.
i am a HORRIBLE liar!)

Family love.

LOVE THEM.

After a successful surprise, we ate lunch, chatted, and then parted ways. I went back home to pick up Mason and then we went over to my mother-in-law's house for dinner (everyone wanted to see Mason - by then I was old news!).

Sunday, it was just me and Mason. I woke up early in order to make sure I could take a shower and get ready before he woke up (I still haven't mastered the showering/getting ready while he's awake yet since I so infrequently have to do it alone) and was surprised that I was ready before he woke up. I enjoyed the quiet time while it lasted and made myself some coffee and sat down to read my "newspaper" (aka bloglovin') and catch up on all the posts I hadn't read yet.

Of course the quiet was short lived and Mason woke up about 5 minutes after I sat down.

Mason hung out in his pj's for a while, we watched cartoons, and ate breakfast.

After breakfast, he seemed like he was in a good mood, so I thought it would be fun to work on an art project that I had in mind : leaf art!

We had actually gone on a walk last weekend to gather our leaves and I had planned on doing the activity then but shortly after the leaf collecting walk, Mason got sick, so we had to postpone the second half until this weekend.

Oh, and if you're wondering, yes... I was that mom that let her son go on a walk around the neighborhood with no pants on.
#sorryimnotsorry

Flash forward to this weekend, everybody was well again, and we were ready for some fun!
(Or so I thought)
For some reason I remembered this activity being so much easier/different when I was little.

I taped two pieces of paper down on the table, with the leaves tucked under the paper.

I strapped Mason in to his seat and thought he would go to town.

Instead, he analyzed the crayons for what seemed like forever.
I tried to encourage coloring, but he just wanted to play with the crayons...

... and the tape...

... and the crayons.

I ended up coloring his leaves and he colored the table.

Overall, I had fun coloring and he had fun playing so it's a win in my book.

Leaf art was over and I made our grocery list and we headed out. I packed enough snacks to get us through the grocery store without a meltdown, or so I thought, but he finished them in like 2 minutes flat. Luckily I was able to distract him for a while and we only had a minor meltdown right before we headed to the check out line.

We got home, went to the park for a little while, ate lunch, and Mason took a nap. And then by the time he woke up, daddy was just walking in the door. We hung out for a bit and then went to my mother-in-law's house for Sunday night family dinner.

Overall, it was a great weekend! Too short, but great nonetheless.

  4. I like the leaf art! When I did those fingerpaint bags, Reese was distracted by the tape holding it up too. I gave her a piece and she proceeded to play with it the rest of the day :) Gotta love toddlers! Oh, and that iced coffee looks delicious!!

  5. Ha! This sounds about like EVERY.SINGLE. craft activity I ever plan. I have all these great ideas, and then Marcus is over it before it even begins.
I love this idea, though, and I'm tucking it away for when Marcus attention to crafts is a little longer than that of a gnat. :)

  9. haha, I pondered the leaf art this year but I figured it would go right over Aria's head or interest...I'm feeling good about somewhere around 4 though! I did see one where you pound some leaves and squish out leaf juice artfully. I thought she might like pounding. So not dead ones, alive ones. The leaf hunting is fun though, even without pants.

I see ranch burgers on your menu! love those things.

  11. Our craft didn't go as planned either but that didn't stop me from putting it up on the mantel for the world to see. I love your artwork, even if it didn't go as you'd hoped.

  12. No shame in your game! And I am right there with you! Myles is a diaper baby all the time! For one I just love his little body and want to cherish it and two it has to be way more comfortable without pants.. shot I would go pantsless if I could! I love relief art like that. I remember I had a Barbie fashion set that you change the plates and then put the paper over and color like that. Myles is the same way about coloring. I try to get him to color and he really has no interest. He likes to paint sometimes but that's it. I want to craft with him but he isn't having it! Yours is super cute though!

p.s. We let Mia walk around the neighborhood, the store, wherever, however she wants because she is so dang cute no matter what (even if everyone else mistakes her for a hoodlum, HA!)
