[3rd Birthday] The Birth-DAY.

Wednesday, July 22, 2015

Phew... I meant to get this post up on Monday... and then Tuesday... and now it's Wednesday. What's that they say about best laid plans? Don't make them if you have a toddler? LOL. Yeah, that's pretty accurate. But never the less, even though it's a few days late, I wanted to share Mason's birthday weekend recap because we had SO. MUCH. FUN. (despite the rain!)

Our original plans were to go to Disneyland on Mason's actual birthday and then have a family get together (BBQ) on Sunday. My niece, Addison's, birthday was on the 20th and my sister-in-law, Erin's, birthday is on the 22nd (today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERIN!), and Mason's birthday was on the 18th, so we wanted to have a family BBQ to celebrate all the birthdays together. But plans changed and we switched the party schedule around and had the family BBQ on Saturday and went to Disneyland on Sunday. Thankfully things happened this way because it rained all day on Saturday (since when does it rain in California, let alone in JULY???).

So, since we all of a sudden had almost the whole birthday day free, I had to come up with another idea to celebrate the birthday boy and make him feel special. I tossed around a few ideas and ultimately decided on a fun breakfast, taking him to a trampoline park for a little while, going out to lunch, letting him nap, and then going to party. However, things didn't go quite as planned...again.

Friday night, I gave my boy one last bath as a two year old (#cuethemomtears) and then got to work. I wanted to surprise Mason in the morning with balloons like we did when he turned two since he loved them so much. Only problem this year? Seth was out at a high school reunion type thing all Friday night and I was left to blow up 15 balloons on my own. Sounds easy, but I swear I almost passed out at the end. Either I'm really out of shape, or it's really hard to blow up balloons on your own. I'm going with the latter.

Never the less, I finished, gathered all the balloons together, wrapped some presents, and then went to bed and hoped that I woke up before Mason started running around his room.

Thankfully I woke up right as he started moving around so I ran downstairs to get the balloons, and Seth and I opened Mason's door and surprised him. To say he was surprised would be an understatement. He LOVED the balloons! And the singing!

After a few minutes of playing, we convinced him that we should go downstairs where there were more balloons to play with and some presents. We took a few minutes to open presents (where Mason got this Hape Alphabet Puzzlethis Paw Patrol book, and this Planes : Fire and Rescue play set) and then Seth made us pancakes for breakfast.

This is where my dilemma for what to do for the rest of the day came in. I had wanted to go see Inside Out, but decided against it because I wanted Mason to take an early nap so we could go to the BBQ early and I thought the movie would run too long. Then I thought we could go to the park and rent bikes and get some ice cream, but we were going to be walking a lot on Sunday and didn't want our legs to hurt. Then I thought we could go to the splash pad, but it was supposed to rain. So, I thought we could go try the trampoline park. Kids like to jump on the trampoline, right?

Wrong.

We got there, paid for an hour of jumping, and... Mason HATED it. With a passion. He clung to the edge of the trampoline for dear life and refused to jump. He liked it when I was holding him and bouncing but we got yelled at for that, so we decided that it wasn't worth it, and it was his birthday, so we should go. The kid could not get his shoes on fast enough!

Lucky for us, the trampoline park was right next to the airport, so we decided to walk over there since Mason has been obsessed with airplanes recently. The fence was RIGHT next to the little airplanes so we had a great view of them taking off and landing. Mason was in heaven.

We stayed for quite a while and watched the airplanes take off and land and then we started to get hungry so we decided to go to Ruby's for lunch. And on the way there...

Rain in July.

We finally got to Ruby's and did what you should do during a birthday lunch - order milkshakes! (Let's be honest, we do this all the time!) I got the kids Oreo shake and figured I would share with Mason but he wanted nothing to do with mine - he loved Seth's 50/50 shake instead! Oh well, more for me? :)

We ate lunch, came home, Mason napped, and we got ready to party! We went over to my sister-in-law's house around 4:30pm and had a wonderful BBQ dinner with family followed by presents followed by cupcakes and an ice cream bar for dessert.

Mason was obsessed with the cupcakes (even though he later refused to eat them and only wanted ice cream) and every time I tried to get a picture of him with them, he would pull the tray towards him at a rapid rate. Thankfully there was always an adult by him or else everyone would have had to eat cupcakes off the floor :)

Overall, it was an amazing day celebrating three wonderful people's birthdays. Mason was ridiculously spoiled and got 3 new puzzles, a scooter, some games, some Lego Duplos, Magformers, some clothes, and sooooo much more! He's been playing with them all all week (the Magformers are his favorite!) and runs straight to his new toy pile everyday when he and Seth get home from school.

And then, on Sunday... we got to go to Mickey's house to celebrate even more!

  1. Sounds like a fabulous birthday! Birthday pancakes, milkshakes, and cupcakes and ice cream... My kind of birthday! And I'm excited to see which alphabet puzzle you chose... I added that one to Noah's Amazon wish list for his birthday too! I don't think noah would like a trampoline park either. He just started to like bounce houses recently. I think he'd be with Mason and prefer the planes too :).

  6. What a perfect day celebrating sweet Mason!! You are super mom for blowing up all those balloons by yourself! I don't even like to do one because, yes, it IS hard work, ha ha! Anyway, that seriously sounds like a perfect day, yummy breakfast, airplanes, ice cream (score for you that he liked Seth's better, ha ha! I'm so selfish, but I LOVE when Mia prefers to share with Eric so that there is more for me, HA!) a BBQ and family time! SO FUN!!

  7. It sounds like Mason had the BEST birth-DAY ever! A little the touches of fun and celebration were so sweet. And the balloon idea is the best! I'm totally borrowing that for future birthdays! (Except I'm totally making Scott blow them up - balloon inflating is no joke)!
And all the sweet treats on his big day? YES, PLEASE! Shakes and cupcakes and ice cream? Sounds like a dream come true to me. :)

  8. Sounds like a great birthday celebration so far. I'm diggin' the pile of birthday pancakes. Ha! It's too bad that he didn't like the trampoline place, maybe when he's a little older he'll enjoy it. :)

  9. Happy happy birthday Mason! I am so glad that y’all still had fun despite the rain. He looks so excited in his bed with the balloons!! Precious. The birthday pancakes are perfect! And his smile/face in the picture below the pancakes is priceless. How sweet!!! Aww, I am sorry he didn’t like the trampoline park. Do you think it was because of all the other kids there? Maybe they scared him? Poor guy! What is Ruby’s? We don’t have those here. The milkshake pictures are the best. Looks like he thoroughly enjoyed that!! Can't wait to hear about Disneyland!!

  14. Lol! You just never know what kids are going to like and what they aren't. Glad the airport was so close. I just HATE it when it rains on a "special day" so frustrating. Hopefully you get a nice day to go soon. LOVE the birthday pancakes and festivities.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MASON!!!

  16. How does he like his hape puzzle? Did you bring the balloons into the room as you went? Last year you snuck them in?
What exactly does a trampoline park look like? Indoors I'm guessing? I think my mind image is not right.
I want hot fudge now though.
