Five on Friday | Book Edition

Friday, March 21, 2014

Those of you who know me, know I don't really read, so you might be confused as to why I am doing a whole post dedicated to books.

It's not that I don't know how to read. I just don't. Well, more so, I don't read books. Give me a magazine, I'll read it any day, but books I have a harder time with. I feel like it's more of an investment and I have to be really interested to want to read one story all the way through.

I've worked in some sort of bookstore for how many years? 10 years! (Yikes!) And I still don't like to read. But hey, in my defense, I work at a college bookstore now and I'm not about to pay $200+ for a biology book to sit down and leisurely read!

Having said that, here are my current faves for me and for Mason.

ONE.
The One and Only

Now one author I found that I do love (seriously love!) is Emily Giffin. I'm not too sure how I originally found her, but I am so happy I did. If you like chick lit, I highly recommend her books. I've actually read all of them except for the one that is coming out in May.

I just love her writing style and her stories are interesting. For those of you that are movie lovers, her first book, Something Borrowed, came out in the movie format a couple years ago and was amazing as well. Something Borrowed and Something Blue are the only ones that you should really read in order as they go together. Baby Proof also kind of does, but I don't think you really need to have read the others to understand the book. The others you can read in whatever order you want! Again, highly recommend!

TWO.
Barnyard Dance!

I ordered Barnyard Dance! by Sandra Boynton after a recommendation from Emily at Dear Owen to help Mason with his speech and I am so glad I did! The book is very catchy with the rhyming and the story and Mason seems to love it! Seth or I read it to him every night and we all are excited about reading it before bed!

THREE.
Dear Zoo.

Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell has been a favorite of ours for months now. Mason seriously LOVES this book so much and gets so excited when we start reading it. I often don't actually follow the words and make up reasons why we have to send the different animals back (frog jumped out the window, monkey ate all of my bananas, etc) and Mason just laughs and laughs. His absolute favorite part is opening the crates and boxes that the animals come in. He gets so excited, I'm afraid he's going to rip the top off the lion's crate!

FOUR.
Follow that Hat.

We've had this book for a while now but Mason recently became interested in it. It's one of those books that has buttons you can push as you read the book. It also has a little sliding door at the top that you can switch between seeing two different types of Goofy's. Mason's been pushing the buttons and moving the door back and forth recently and actually letting me read the whole book to him without shutting the pages on my fingers. And that's a win in my book!

FIVE.
This Bleep is Hard.

I was reading Julie's blog, The Girl in the Red Shoes, a month-ish ago, when she was having a giveaway. It was for an ebook copy of a book called This Bleep is Hard by Marie Oates. Sounded interesting to me, so I thought I would enter to win. Hey, why not? I could use a new book to read and it was free to enter. And you know what? I WON! I never win anything so this was quite exciting for me. Julie told me that I won and that Marie would be in contact with me to send me my ebook copy of her book. A couple hours later and I was the new owner of her ebook. Now, I hate to admit this, but I have yet to start reading it. It looks amazing and I was so excited to read it when I found out that I won, but I just have no time between work and having a toddler. I plan to start this weekend while Seth is away and I have the nights after Mason goes to bed all to myself :)

Does anyone have any good book recommendations? For mama or for Mason? I'd love to hear!

Happy weekend!
