[Summer Reading Challenge] Link Up #2

Thursday, July 9, 2015

A month or so ago when StephanieCourtney, and I announced our summer reading challenge, I was really excited to start reading more with Mason. We've checked in once to share our first three summer reading books, and now I'm back again today sharing what else we've been reading. Of course we read often, so there are plenty more where these came from, but these are the ones we specifically chose for the challenge and picked off the idea list.

(recently published - 2012)

We've had this book for a while (along with Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site) and we love both! I personally like this one better because I like the rhyming, but Mason's not picky and often chooses both when I ask him what book he wants to read.

And something REALLY fun to do after reading this book? If you are in the New Jersey area (or close or are planning a vacation), Meghan shared an AWESOME place called Diggerland that would be SO fun to take your kids to!

This book is your basic, run of the mill board book. Technically Mason is way too old for this type of book, but he pulls it out time and time again so I go with it. He loves to see the people on the plane, see the different type of planes, and see them loading the planes for take off. He's been really into planes in general these days and always points out if he hears/sees one in the sky so this book has been pulled out more than a few times recently.

I didn't take any pictures of us doing any activities after reading this book, but should you want to do an activity, I would recommend trying to get as close as possible to your local airport and having a picnic and watching the planes come in/land or watching a plane themed movie (our favorite is Planes : Fire and Rescue).

(Little Golden Book)

It's no secret that we love 'things that go' in this household. Mason has been obsessed with cars, trains, boats, and planes for a while. And when we got this Little Golden Book in our Secret Santa Mommy and Me Book Exchange in December, a certain little boy was pretty excited. When we first got it, he just wanted to flip through the book and look at all the car pictures. But now, 7 months later, he will actually sit still long enough for me to read him a story. And I love it because there are a few different stories in it, so when Mason's constantly picking the same book to read, I can choose which one I want to read and things don't get monotonous and boring for mama.

  1. We love "Where Do Diggers Sleep at Night" too! Noah loves pointing out the mamas and babies on every page! Noah asked for a construction themed party for his 3rd birthday and we are giving this book as his favor! We just ordered it yesterday!

  2. oh we love the comp little golden books! Aria's fave right now is a comp Disney JR one. It has 9 and I usually tell Aria she has to pick something new after 3 of those, so it is nice to get some variety. I'm with you there!

  4. Such great choices for a little boy. Although we love the Planes movies too. Taking him to see the Planes was a fantastic idea! We really need to get on board and caught up with our list.

  5. I love that you pair books with fun activities. I really need to start doing something like that. Mac is also obsessed with board books that he's way too old for. We have some with pictures of baby faces/expressions that he is still enamored with. I've been wanting to pass them down to Mim, but he freaks out. Weirdo. :)

  6. You guys need to go to (the Caribbean island) St Maarten, I guess there's an airport RIGHT by the beach and when planes land, it looks like there're like 100 ft about all the people on the beach, Mason would be in heaven (definitely look up pictures of it, you won't believe it!!).
We need to take notes and do some book-related activities, would be so fun and a good way to relate the story, lesson, etc.

  7. Have you read Jimmy Fallons book? I read it standing in an aisle in Target and thought it was so cute! Definitely more of a daddy book but still good :)

  9. I need to start incorporating activities with some of the books we read. I see all these great posts with amazing ideas, and then I totally drop the ball.
We do want to head to Long Beach one of these days to watch planes take off and land. Scott works right by the airport and the parking garage has an open top that would be perfect to see planes. If/when we go maybe we could all go together!
