[Who, What, Where, When, Why] My 5 W's of Blogging.

Thursday, March 23, 2017

I thought I'd post this on a Thursday as a sort of "confessions" post because truth is, I've been a little nervous to post it. It's actually been sitting in my drafts folder for MONTHS, pretty much done minus a little tweaking, but I've just been nervous to post it... mainly because of my "why". I finally decided that I've waited too long, so here it is...

Unrelated picture of my computer and the best apple loaf EVER from Starbucks. But slightly related because that's my computer and I like to have snacks while blogging. LOL.

The theme of this year was to do less, more often and I definitely feel like I've done that. I've done more where it counts (with my family) and I've done less where it counts (on this blog). This doesn't mean that I want to quit blogging (no how, no way!), but I do want to be more intentional and present in my "real life" vs my "online life", so to speak. Last year I was so focused on spending time reading blogs, commenting on blogs, and writing blog posts during every second of my spare time, that I think I missed out on a lot. I would stress myself out thinking about how I needed to post something everyday or how I had so many blogs to read and catch up on, that I would often fall asleep on the couch in front of my computer at night. And I don't want that for 2017. I DEFINITELY plan to continue blogging. I definitely plan to continue reading and commenting on my friend's blogs. But I'm just going to cut back a little. I don't really know what that means for me right now, but I do know that it means that if I feel like I want to go to bed at 8:01pm, right after Mason goes to bed at 8pm, then I will. I do know that it means that if I want to binge watch TGIT shows on Thursday nights instead of blog for Friday, then I will. I do know that if it means that I can spend extra time hanging out with my family and doing fun things on the weekend instead of creating a weekend recap for Monday, then I will. Basically, I don't want the blog to ever make me feel stressed and when it does, I need to take a step back and re-evaluate.

So, with that, I thought I'd do a little "My 5 W's of Blogging" today. A couple of blog friends did this a while back last year and I LOVED it and have actually been wanting to do one myself, so new year (can I still say that at the end of March? LOL), new post on who I blog about, what I blog about, where I blog, when I blog, and most importantly... WHY I blog.

Here we go!

WHO do I blog about?

Well this is an easy one! Mason, Seth, myself, and sometimes other family members depending on the situation. More generally -- my life.

WHAT do I blog about?

Mason. Our family life. Our weekends. Trips to Disneyland. Autism updates. Confessions. Stitch Fix.  A Day in the Life. Recipes. Random things I'm loving. Day to day stuff. My love of Target and Starbucks. You name it, I've probably touched on it.

WHERE do I blog?

Sitting at my dining room/kitchen table or on the couch. I wish I had a designated space for my computer and my stuff, but at this point, I don't, so I blog where I'm most comfortable.

WHEN do I blog?

Whenever I have time! Which these days is not very often...

For a while, I was dropping Mason off at school and Seth was picking him up. I'd get off work around 3pm-ish and I'd get home and be alone for a good 2+ hours. It was amazing how much I could get done. Sadly, that hasn't been happening as much any more since I pick Mason up at least 2 days a week after school for ABA and sometimes more if he has an appointment or if it's Seth's Friday off. I don't mind and I'll happily do what's best and what's needed for my family, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the "me time" in the afternoon.

So, these days? I haven't really been blogging much. I've been opting for TV time after Mason goes to bed or, to be completely honest, I fall asleep around 9pm on the couch. Total glamorous life going on over here! The other night I made myself sit up (laying down on the couch is my biggest downfall, it's like instant sleep) and I got out my computer and I went through tons of posts I was behind on reading and tried to work on some of the 20 drafts I have going on. If I could just invent a couple more hours in my day, I'd be set. Or so I think. Ha!

WHY do I blog?

I've struggled with how to answer this one for a while, mainly because I don't want to offend anyone. So first, let me say, this answer is why I (just ME) blog. Secondly, blogging looks different for each person and that's TOTALLY fine! In fact, it's more than fine, I love it! It would be boring if all of our blogs looked and sounded the same.

That being said... I do not blog for money. Never have, never will. I have, however, done a few sponsored posts in the past, as well as promoted products that I've gotten for free.  But, having said that, just doing the few posts that I've done, I don't really even like doing sponsored posts. I don't like the pressure of taking picture perfect photos and editing them and making sure you follow all the guidelines. I don't like the pressure of having to post on a specific day. I don't like how I feel fake when I do them. To me, the money wasn't worth it. And maybe it's because I just really don't have a lot of time to do all of that these days, but honestly, I'd much rather share my heart or what we've been up to than share something that someone else told me to do.

Blogging is not and never will be my source of income. Seth and I both have full time jobs and those are our sources of income. I never have and never will blog solely for money. If I'm being completely honest, this is when I stop reading most people's blogs and I do not want that for my blog.

Hear me out...

I created my blog way back in 2012 as a way for friends and family who live far away to be able to keep up with what my family is up to. My dad and step mom live in Northern California and don't get to see Mason nearly as often as Seth's parents. I wanted them to be able to see pictures of their grandson growing up and see what we're up to. I never in a MILLION years ever thought I'd blog or that I'd have anything to write about that people would want to read and really only expected them (family members) to read it. Slowly but surely my little blog began to grow and although it is still a very little blog, I have a good group of blogging friends that I enjoy reading their blogs and I think they enjoy mine. Slowly my blog began to grow and the things that I posted about slowly began to change. My voice always stayed the same, but the topics that I shared evolved.

And I LOVE it. The connections and relationships that I've made through blogging have been incredible.

THIS IS WHY I BLOG.

I blog to keep my friends and family informed on our life happenings and because of the relationships  and genuine friendships that I've formed. And this is why I just can't quit you, blogging!

Call me nosy, but I love reading what my friends have been up to. People who don't blog probably think I'm crazy that I have such good friends that I've met on the internet and most of whom I've never met in person, but people who blog get it. I love hearing about what my blog friends have been up to. I love getting good recipe recommendations. I've found countless products (much to Seth's dismay) that are now my favorites. And the list goes on. I don't blog for money. I won't promote just any product just because someone paid me to do so. I'm not actively seeking collaborations. For every one email that I accept, there are five to ten that I say no to. (And these days I'm saying no to everything that's been coming my way.) I won't go five days straight posting sponsored post after sponsored post because someone paid me XYZ to promote their products and I just had to except every single sponsorship that came my way. I won't share a product that I've never used in real life except for an hour or two before taking some pictures. I won't forget about sharing my real life with my friends but instead hope they click/beg they click my link so I can get paid. That's not me. That's not who I am. Yes, I have shared about my LuLaRoe online pop up sale but I did that because I have and love their product. I paid my own money for their products and I want to share them with you. Yes, I did post an app for the iPad (back in January) that Mason uses because I knew it was something he'd genuinely use and like. He actively seeks out that app on his own, without my prompting. Yes, I have hosted an online trunk show for Stella and Dot... when a portion of the proceeds goes towards finding a cure for breast cancer... a cause that I have direct connection with and would love to find a cure for so nobody else has to lose their mother too young to the terrible disease.

Yes, you can scroll back on my blog and see a few sponsored posts that I've done. Heck, scroll back a couple months when I shared my Christmas cards. There definitely are some perks to blogging, I won't deny that, but my sole purpose in blogging is not to get free stuff, it's not to make money. And again, these posts are sprinkled in with my regular posts, maybe once a month. Maybe.

I don't mean to dwell on this, but it's something that I've been thinking about for a long time now. I understand that blogging is an income for some people and that's great! Seriously, I genuinely applaud those women for being able to be stay at home moms and support their families, BUT that's not me and I don't relate to that. I did a "sponsored" (got an item for free) post a couple weeks ago and even though Mason honestly, truthfully did LOVE it, I still felt so fake writing the post. There have been so many blogs that I used to love that have become purely sponsored that I've stopped reading. Same goes for blogs that seem to be trying to "strike at rich" with Pinterest fame. And it sucks! Because I genuinely used to love them, but now I feel like we have nothing in common since they're promoting this one day, that the next, something else the next and they seem to conflict with not only each other but how I know they are in real life.  I just feel like I know nothing about the person anymore. I want real. I want real life. I want relatable. I want recipes you've really tried and loved. I want day in life posts. I want to hear about your weekend. I want to hear about products you bought on your own and truly love because you've used them more than once.

And that's what I try to portray here. My pictures aren't perfect. My house isn't the cleanest. I epically fail at most Pinterest projects that I try. But that's real life. And that's what you'll see here. I blog to blog. I blog because I like sharing my life with people. I blog because of the AMAZING relationships that I've formed. It's crazy. I never thought I could make such good friends by meeting them online and if you told me I would through blogging, maybe five or so years ago, I would have laughed. But it's true. And those of you who blog can probably relate. In fact, some of my best friends I met through blogging and we text DAILY. True story.

My #postofficeadventuresofmasonb photos on Instagram are some of my least "liked" photos. Will I stop posting them because I don't get as many "likes" on them as I do other pictures? NEVER. Because I love them and love the little project that I've started and love that special time that Mason and I get together. In fact, my updates on Mason on the blog are some of my lowest page views when I compare all my posts. Sad, but true. Will I stop posting updates about Mason? NEVER. This is my scrapbook. This is our family and I want these posts to look back on.

I might be a week behind on reading your posts. I might be 3 days behind on responding to emails. But when I do have a free minute to sit down and do it, I respond in a meaningful way because I really did read your post and I really do care that you took the time to comment on my post. I appreciate every single one of you who reads my blog. I wish more people would comment so we could make a connection. It just takes one comment and you never know what might happen.

At this point, I think I've started rambling on and I know everyone's time is precious and you're probably getting tired of hearing me talk, so I'll leave you with this...

I hope when you come to my blog and you read my posts, that you know that I really took the time and thought and effort into them. I care that you're here and I care that you read it. I love sharing our life and I love reading about yours. I love making new connections with people who can relate to what I'm sharing and I love keeping the old connections going. I will always blog to blog because I love the relationships that I've formed from it. I love the digital scrapbook that I'm making. I might not be the most popular or make any money or have the most page views, but to me, that doesn't matter.

For those of you that have made it this far, thank you! I truly appreciate you!

[Reader Poll] Help! What Would YOU Like to See More of?

Tuesday, August 30, 2016

First of all, I wanted to thank you all SO much for your sweet comments on my four year blogiversary post last week. I loved reading them all and literally wish I could have given you ALL a $10 gift card to Target and a $10 gift card to Starbucks! (ps I responded to as many comments as I could but a lot of you were "no-reply commenters" so I couldn't email back! If you're not sure if you're a "no-reply commenter", check out this super simple tutorial that my friend Beth put together! I'd love to be able to email you back if you leave a comment for me!)

Speaking of gift cards though... a big congratulations to Sonia P. on winning the gift cards! I hope you enjoy a little shopping and some coffee on me! :)

As a side note to that post, I thought I would do my first ever ask the reader type post. I've always been the type that just posts about whatever I want to post about. And while this is my blog and I will never post about anything that I don't think fits in with my blog style and genre, I thought I would ask you all, the readers, to see if there's anything specific you would like me to post more about or a topic that I've never covered that you might be interested in.

For example...
Do you want more recipe posts?
Do you want more updates on Mason and his autism diagnosis?
Do you want to see more fashion type posts like my Stitch Fix posts?
Do you want more Day in the Life type posts?
Do you want more weekend recaps?
Do you want me to do a post where you ask questions and I answer them?

What would you like to see more of? Or do you like the variety that I already have? Leave me a comment and let me know. Maybe you have a topic that you'd love me to write on that I hadn't thought of before or a topic that I could expand a little more on. If I can, I'd love to cater some posts to topics that you'd like to hear more about!

Thank you all for supporting me and my blog over the past four years!

Four Year Blogiversary + a Giveaway!

Tuesday, August 23, 2016

Last week Sunday (August 14th) was my FOUR year blog anniversary! And to celebrate, I'm giving you the opportunity to win TWO gift cards! Why two? Because I couldn't decide which one so I chose both :) I mean, everyone loves Starbucks AND Target, right? Really the only thing better than Starbucks AND Target is a Starbucks IN a Target. #amiright

I can't believe four years ago, I hit publish on my very first post. (I also can't believe that my BABY just turned four as well!) Oh how far I have come. If you're interested in reading my very first blog post, you can find it here. In fact, I find it so silly that that is my first blog post because in reality, apparently, it was my second. I was so tech savvy that I hit publish (or who knows what button!) and nothing happened and somehow I DELETED the whole thing. Haha. Silly me.

I still can't believe what this little space has grown into. And I am so, so proud of it! Blogging is definitely a hobby for me but I've been given some amazing opportunities because of it. And I've made some amazing friends as well - "virtual reality friends" as Seth calls them as well as virtual reality turned real reality friends. And I love it! Who would have thought that in four years I... would have people who genuinely like reading what I've been up to? And who would have thought that I could make real life friends? I sure didn't when I hit that 'publish' button four whole years ago but I'm sure glad I did!

So, today, I wanted to share with you my top five reader favorite posts from the past year as well as my top five favorites. However, if you're not interested in recapping the past, or things you've already read, don't forget to scroll all the way down to the bottom and enter the giveaway!

Reader Favorites

1 // Stitch Fix (in order of popularity) -- five, one, two, three, six, sevenfour

2 // Mason's New Big Boy Bed

3 // [A Day in the Life] Summer Edition and [A Day in the Life] January

4 // [4th Birthday] Blogger/(not so) Toddler Birthday Exchange

5 // The Bridal Shower Weekend that Started with the Cops Arresting Someone on my Plane

My Favorites
(in no particular order)

Cooking with Kids!
Our Disney Cruise -- Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Days 5 and 6
Kids Teach You the Most Important Lessons
The introduction of #postofficeadventuresofmasonb
My Journey to Motherhood
Mason's 4th birthday weekend and Disneyland

(Ok, ok that was 6! But it was so hard to narrow it down to just 5 of my favorites! For reader posts I could go based on numbers, but for these I just had to choose - which is never easy! Plus I loved all the ones that the readers love too!)

Thank you all so, so much for reading and supporting my blog! I truly love reading your comments and connecting with all of you!

Now, please, I'd love to send you a couple gift cards for you to get some goodies for YOU (no kiddo presents allowed!). The giveaway is open to residents of the US and Canada only (Canadians I know you don't have Target so I'll just send $20 to Starbucks if you win!) and starts on August 23, 2016 at midnight PST and ends on August 27, 2016 at midnight PST. Winner will be notified by me. All entries will be verified.

Good luck!

Elevate 2016 [my first blog conference]

Wednesday, May 18, 2016

Last weekend, I attended my first blog conference with Desiree and Erin. None of us had ever been to a blog conference before and none of us had any idea what to expect. We were given a few insider tips in our blog conference Facebook page, but other than that, we had no idea what we'd be doing or walking in on on Saturday.

When we first walked in, I was a little overwhelmed. I was immediately SO glad that they were both there with me. I'm terrible at meeting new people (I'm so shy!) and honestly probably would have been fine not meeting anyone new. I was there to see what the conference had to offer me as a blogger and to have a fun girls day with Desiree and Erin.

We checked in, got our swag bags, and were told that there was a fun little scavenger hunt to go on before the activities got started. The three of us found a table to put our stuff down at and then started the scavenger hunt. We made our way over to the beach since "toes in the sand" was one of the prompts and were immediately greeted by one of the presenters, Jenica from A Slice of Style. I didn't follow her blog or her Instagram but I had heard of her and her infertility journey (she's now expecting twins in a few months!) so I kind of recognized her. She was so, so sweet and asked if I wanted to take a picture of "toes in the sand" with her. I did. There were a couple other girls around the area and a "five person selfie" was another one of the prompts. I was worried how we were all going to fit in the picture but thankfully Jenica had long arms and perfected our "five person selfie" for us. She went on her way to go mingle some more and we continued with our scavenger hunt. By now almost everyone had arrived and they told us to go inside for the first speaker.

Here is our rough schedule that we went by for the day.

11:00-11:30am : Registration
11:30am-12:15pm : Speaker : Chari Pack @persnicketyprints
12:15-1:00pm : Lunch : Stonefire Grill @stonefiregrill
1:00-3:00pm : Creative Workshops by @sizzix, @meandmybigideas, and @myoverlays
3:00-3:45pm : Speaker : Rebecca Lopez @craftedsparrow
3:45-4:00pm : Break
4:00-5:00pm : Business Panel : Ashley @ashleysfreshfix, Vanessa @chatbooks, and Amy @livandhope
5:00-5:45pm : Dinner : Taco Asylum @tacoasylum
5:45-6:30pm : Speaker : Jenica Parcell @asliceofstyle
6:30-7:00pm : Raffles and Closing

The first speaker was Chari from Persnickety Prints. I'd been following Persnickety Prints on Instagram for a while, so I was super excited to hear her speak. Her presentation was AMAZING. She dove a little into her personal life, how Persnickety Prints got started, and various other inspirational messages. It was really amazing. She also ended up sitting at my table for lunch (our seats were assigned) and I had a chance to talk to her a little more. I'm so happy she was a speaker at our conference.

After lunch, we rotated around different craft areas and got to make some cool crafts. One station was the Sizzix station where we got to make this beautiful necklace out of leather. It was really fun to do, but let me tell you, I much prefer to buy my jewelry than make it! Holy cow. I think it took me 30 minutes to make my one necklace. The next station was with Me and My Big Ideas. I literally had no idea that they were in the planner world until Saturday. I used to use their stickers ALL THE TIME for scrapbooking, but I guess about a year ago, they came out with the Happy Planner. Not only did they show us and tell us about it, but we got to have one of our own! Seriously it's gorgeous and it came with tons of fun inserts and stickers and so much stuff that I could spend hours decorating. They were so generous! The last station was the Overlays station. She basically taught us all kinds of IKEA hacks to make our IKEA furniture more unique and decorative. We decorated a mirror with an overlay (that we got to keep) and they gave us a brochure of all the possibilities that we could do with overlays. Seriously, I wish I had a house! There were some gorgeous ways to spruce up an otherwise regular ol' plain IKEA dresser.

After the workshops, we went back inside to hear Rebecca from Crafted Sparrow talk. I'd never heard of her but she basically told us about her journey to where she's at now. She was a working woman until she had her first child and then once her child was born, she couldn't imagine going back to work. She and her husband made it work and she was able to stay home. As much as she loved being home with their child, she was lacking the ability to express her creative side. So she started a blog. And it has only grown from there. She has crazy big companies approaching her for collaborations now, including Coke for the Super Bowl this year, and many others. Her creativity and her blog have allowed her family to gain addition income... all for something she loves to do and allows her to stay home with their children.

By this point, time was running a little low so we skipped the break and headed straight into the business panel of speakers. First up was Ashley from Ashley's Fresh Fix, second was Vanessa from Chatbooks, and third was Amy from Liv and Hope. They all shared their journeys to becoming business women (whatever that might mean to them - they all have different forms of businesses) and were just very inspirational in terms of following your dreams, never giving up, don't let bullies on the internet get you down, and other uplifting messages similar to those.

After the business panel, we broke for dinner and had some AMAZING tacos from Taco Asylum and took a group photo.

After dinner was our last speaker, Jenica Parcell, whom we met earlier. I was really excited to hear her talk about her journey and see how her journey could relate to all of us. Seriously she was the sweetest person and was so open and honest about everything. She has a blog where she posts deals on clothes and things like that. She'd fill up her blog and her Instagram with all these happy pictures of her seemingly perfect life, but on the inside, she wasn't happy. They were struggling with infertility and she wasn't sharing that story with anyone. So, on the outside, she was happy Jenica, but on the inside, she wasn't so happy. Then one day, she decided to share her story. She drafted the blog post, hit post, and sat there in shock that she shared her story with the whole internet. And what happened? SO MUCH POSITIVE FEEDBACK. I've said it once, and I'll say it again, but the blogging community is amazing. Thankfully and luckily I've had nothing but positive experiences (knock on wood) but I know there can be such hateful and mean people out there. But when you can be so vulnerable and honest and open and get such positive feedback from perfect strangers, it makes you realize why you blog and why you share so honestly and openly. She did say that since then, she's had some people say some not so nice/positive things to her like on a picture she posted of her eating a hot dog in the Costco parking lot but she feels like its more out of concern than mal intent. But she also did say that after all of this, after everything she's been through, she's found that she lets things roll of her back more easily now. People can say mean things to you in person or on the internet, but maybe it's because they are at an unhappy place in their life. Maybe they aren't really mean. You never know what's going on behind someone's smile. And like they say, never judge a book by it's cover.

After Jenica was done speaking, it was time to wrap it up and to do the raffle. Unfortunately I didn't win anything, but I felt like a winner already with my overflowing swag bag of goodies to take home.

So, overall, was it worth it? Would I do it again? Yes. I would. And honestly, in the first few minutes and hours, I wasn't so sure I'd say that. I did meet a few people, all nice, but I did feel a little out of place. People would ask me "what do you do?" and I'd say I had a mom blog about my family and motherhood and to be honest... I felt so lame. I thought this was a blog conference but there were TONS of people there who were business owners or were significantly more successful than me. BUT! Now I know. I even went out and made business cards because that's what they suggested, but I definitely didn't need them. I did hand out a few but I felt silly doing it. But for the future, if I go next year, I'll know what to expect more. I mean, heck, I'd go back just for the food and the speakers and the swag bag! Ha! But really, it was good information and I did enjoy myself even though I do wish that they had talked about blogging and photography more. I was definitely hoping to get some photography tips (especially iphoneography!), but they didn't touch on that at all.

The biggest quote that I took away from the whole event was to find your tribe and love them hard. Through blogging, I really feel like I've found people who are my tribe and I do love them hard. I'm so glad that I entered into this crazy world of blogging almost four years ago because without it, I wouldn't have been introduced to so many wonderful people. So glad that I got to spend my Saturday with Erin and Desiree and that they wanted to go to this conference with me! So, shall we sign up for next year girls? :)

Seeing as how we only have two days left in the year (how is this even possible???), I thought I'd do a fun little recap of the year - reader favorites as well as my personal favorites!

Personal Favorites :

Honestly, this was kind of hard! I do love a lot of the reader favorites (not surprising that you all like what I like!), so I had to do some searching to find these ones. The 10 posts above are all high on my list as are the 10 below (in no particular order).

1 // Mason's IKEA Picture Ledge Bookshelves
2 // [3rd Birthday] Blogger Toddler Birthday Exchange - Round 2!
3 // [DIY] Children's Art Gallery Wall
4 // [Gifts for the Husband] DIY Beer Advent Calendar

8 // Motherhood from Every Angle
9 // [3rd Birthday] Disneyland
10 // [A Year of Dates] January (and all the other months!)

I know this sounds kind of conceited, but I had a hard time choosing my favorites! Looking back on all the posts I've done this year, I kind of love them all! Which I guess is good... since it is my blog... I should love what I post! But really, between our weekend adventures, various holiday and birthday adventures, my confessions, the Guy Behind the Blog, currently posts, and so much more, it was hard to narrow down my favorites.

Thank you all so much for reading (and commenting!) on my blog! I feel so lucky to have such amazing readers and to have met and connected with some even more amazing women (and even some in person!). Never in my wildest dreams would I have made real friendships through an online community, but I truly have, and am so grateful for it.

Here's to more fun in 2016!

The Versatile Blogger Award.

Monday, December 14, 2015

The rules of accepting this award are as follows:
Thank the person who nominated you.
Link back to their blog.
Share 7 facts about yourself.
Nominate up to 15 other bloggers.

So, here we go!

A huge thank you to Crystal from Hall Around Texas, Whitney from Work It Mommy, and Becky from bybmg for nominating me for this award! When I first started blogging a little over there years ago, I never imagined meeting such amazing people. I never thought anyone would read my blog. I'm so thankful to have found, connected with, and made relationships with such wonderful ladies!

Seven Facts :

1 // I've become a much more aggressive driver now that I live in Southern California. I don't know if people drive worse here or if I'm just more critical, but I get so annoyed so easily at people. People who drive too slow. People who drive too fast. People who don't use their turn signal to change lanes or turn. People who cut you off without saying thank you. People who you wave to let go in front of you and don't say thank you. And the list goes on.

2 // I am a self diagnosed chocoholic (and Oreo-aholic). Like no joke, I pretty much crave at least one piece of chocolate a day. And if there's a big basket of my favorites (like there is at work right now), I'm pretty much in trouble. I've had at least three per day for the past week or so.

3 // Christmas lights make me SO happy. I love them on the tree but I also love hanging them inside my house. We aren't big outside decorators (however, I do LOVE when people decorate outside for me to see!), but I love to hang the lights inside around our windows. It just makes me so happy!

4 // I LOVE when the sunrise or sunset lights up the sky. It's SO beautiful and I so rarely catch it, that I always feel so lucky to see it when I do. The other day at work, I happened to be awake and outside during the sunrise and if I wasn't so busy... I would have taken a picture. But the other night, I happened to step outside at the right time to throw away some trash and was greeted with the most beautiful sunset!

5 // I love the wrapping paper that has the grid lines on it. It seriously makes it SO much easier to at least attempt to cut in a straight line. Bonus points if I can start cutting and then hold the scissors and it cuts perfectly all the way down the line versus having to cut cut cut my way down. Anyone else know what I mean???

6 // I am so far behind on blogging our Christmas festivities that I hope you all don't mind still reading about it in January! Ha. #onlyhalfkidding

7 // Ever since I did the whole 30 back in January, I haven't been able to drink regular coffee. I cut it out for the month since I couldn't have creamer and when I started drinking it again, the caffeine made me SO jittery. I now order decaf and drink it because I like the taste, not to keep myself awake.

8 // I don't really understand how listing seven things about myself makes me "versatile" but I thought this would be fun so I wanted to play along anyway :)

I nominate...

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

Tuesday, July 7, 2015

First of all, I'd like to send a huge THANK YOU to Michelle for nominating me for this award! It's such an honor to be nominated by you!

When I googled to try to find the rules of this award, I found a couple different sets of rules, but these were the most common ones.

Here are the rules for this award:
1 // Provide a link and thank the blogger who nominated you for this award.
2 // Answer a few questions about yourself.
3 // Nominate 5-10 blogs that you love.
4 // Include the award logo within your blog post.

So, let's get started. Here are the questions she asked of me :

1 // What do you hope to accomplish with your blog?
Honestly, my blog has exceeded my wildest dreams. Not that I have the most popular blog ever (and that's definitely not why I started blogging) but I never in my wildest dreams imagined that anyone but my family members would read my blog or that I would make friendships through blogging. It's been an awesome surprise and I'm loving the 'ride' I'm on and the opportunities that I have been given. No matter what happens, I always want to keep my voice, stay true to myself, and be honest and truthful and authentic. And most of all, I never want it to feel like work. This is a hobby for me. A hobby that I enjoy. I like writing and sharing our story. And if it ever feels like a burden or I feel stressed, then I need to step back and evaluate. I hope that never happens.

2 // Do you write for any other websites?
Right now, I don't. I wouldn't mind it though and am definitely open to it in the future. Unless you can consider guest posting on someone else's blog as writing for other websites? Because in that case, I have done that.
I'm not sure if it can really be called writing for another website but I did submit one of my blog posts to the Autism Speaks website and they published on their blog (and it's been shared over 4,000 times on Facebook - which is SO crazy and unreal and amazing)! But I didn't write it for them, I wrote it for my blog originally.

3 // What have you learned about blogging since you started?
It is SO much more time consuming than I thought! I thought I could just sit down, write something, upload some pictures, and poof - I'm done. But writing posts, editing photos (and I don't even know how to do half of what I should do/what other people do!), proof reading and such take up so much more time than I thought. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but sometimes when life gets busy, blogging has to take a seat on the back burner since I just don't have time for everything.
And one of the BEST things I've learned? You can make connections with people that you've never met and might never meet that can be some of the best relationships of your life. It sounds CRAZY to people who don't blog, but people who do, totally understand. It's crazy how people can come into your life and crazy how you can meet some of your best friends and people who just 'get you'.

4 // Provide a link to your favorite blog post.
A Letter to my Son with Autism and [Autism Diagnosis] Thoughts and Feelings from a Mother with a Child with Autism. Both for the same and for different reasons. I know this sounds kind of cocky, but in the letter to Mason, I love how I wrote. I basically sat down, typed my feelings, cried a bunch, and typed some more. I left it for a few days, re-read it and thought I would make changes, but couldn't find anything to change. It's one of the only posts that I haven't re-read and changed at least one thing on. I just think it describes how I feel about him perfectly. And then in the "thoughts and feelings" post, I feel like I was just so honest and raw. I admitted some flaws, I described some strengths, but all around, I was me.

5 // Provide a link to the post you think is the most popular.
Honestly I have no idea! But if I had to guess... A Letter to my Son with Autism

6 // What was your very first job and what did you learn from that experience?
I think my first job was being a babysitter. I definitely learned responsibility from that since I was in charge of other little human beings. I learned that I love playing with children and knew that I wanted to be a mom when I grew up.

7 // Does your family read your blog and if so does this affect what you say or how you say it?
My family does read my blog. I know for sure Seth does and I'm pretty sure my Dad and step-mom do as well. However, I'm not totally sure about anyone else. That being said, it does and doesn't affect what I say. It's kinda of hard to explain. I mean, regardless of if they did or didn't read my blog, I would never slam anyone or say anything bad about anyone on my blog. Or online for that matter. I mean, why? Whether I'm related to them or not, there's just no need to be rude to someone on the internet. I do, however, have Seth proof read some posts I post before I post them (whoa post overload) because I want to make sure he is ok with everything I share about our family. He's always been so, so supportive of anything I want to share, but I am aware of if I'm over-sharing or not and want to make sure he approves.

8 // Have you made virtual friends because of blogging?
Yes! But more than virtual friends, real friends. And that's something I never really imagined. I mean, I hoped to make some connections with others by reading and commenting on their blogs, but I never imagined I would make real life friends and really connect with these woman. If I had unlimited money, I would visit each and everyone one of them in person or would organize some sort of blogger meet up somewhere. We would have the best time.

9 // What is your dream vacation?
Oh goodness, there's so many places I'd like to go. But I'd have to say Bora Bora or Australia.

10 // One piece of advice you would give fellow bloggers.
Be genuine. Be authentic. Be you. Write about what you love. In your voice. They might say that copying someone is the biggest form of flattery, but in the blog world, it is blog suicide. Nobody wants to read someone else's post on your blog, even if you change a few words. Be true to yourself. Be real. And you'd be surprised what might happen.
